Drugs

The Kenyan education system is experiencing a lot of hardships trying to help the many number of its students that affected by abusing the various kinds of harmful drugs making them perform poorly in class and eventually end up quitting education. Many students start abusing by simple means that later upgrade and make them become addicts to levels that are beyond the control of many people. The following list outlines some of the commonly abused drugs in the various universities and colleges in Kenya.

Alcohol

Alcohol is still the number one form of drug that is commonly taken by many students. The percentage of students that have chosen to refrain from drinking habits is as little as 19percent.Many students end up using the money meant for constructive activities such as classroom work for their own selfish benefits. It is important therefore to ensure that there is no room for college students to actively be involved in alcohol consumption habits. The government has also increased the price and reduced the drinking hours as a way of ensuring that the student will find it inconvenient to take the drug.

Marijuana and Designer drugs

The two drugs are the second most categories of drugs that are abused by most campus students hence they should be regulated so as to reduce the number of students suffering by using them. They can be consumed through the process of inhalation that includes taking in of nitrous oxide via the nose. The method is the most popular with college students. Another way by which drugs are taken is by the use of smoking technology to inhale them. The habit is dangerous and can lead to cancer.

 MDMA Drugs

The third group comprises of the ecstasy MDMA drugs. The drug has been noted to be the most popular drug that is growing among the very number of college students. The drug comes in pill form having a variety of appearances. The traditional ones are usually white in color having the X imprint marks. The composition of the drugs keeps varying depending on the types of manufacturers and the people making them. The chemical makeup and structure greatly vary in volatility.

Kenya youth service scholarships, this academic scholarship is accessible for undergraduate both continuing and those joining first year, the scholarship has given a special consideration for those taking early childhood education, the scholars gets full sponsorship including meals and accommodation, the government initiative is meant to compliment the quality of basic education in Kenya. The program develops strong professionals in the field of education to meet the raising need for trained teachers.

The Ministry of Education has collaborated with Teachers Service Commission to ensure this scholarship program bears good fruits. The applicants are required to provide a fully filled sponsorship application form, provide a DEOs recommendation letter for those in service and attach copies of relevant documents. There is a committee who selects the candidates and notifies them.

Aga Khan University Scholarships, the program offers scholarship to those who have interest of taking their Masters Degree in education, the program takes a period of two years and it’s a full time study, the classes for this program start in the month of November. The applicants should be employed either by Teachers Service Commission or private sector. They should be teachers of English, Mathematics, Science and Social studies; they should be holding a leadership position in their career. Applicants should apply for a paid study leave and have their application processed through Teachers Service Commission.

The applicants in the private sector can fail to apply through their employer; they should be willing to further their studies in English, Mathematics, Social, Geography and History. All the applicants should be fluent in English, hold a Bachelors Degree not below 2nd class honors upper division. Before the candidates are selected for this program they must do an oral interview and English proficiency test.

USIU Academic Scholarships, the institution has been offering numerous scholarships over the years, Kenyan citizens interested in taking undergraduate programs in Journalism and Psychology, International relations, Accounting, Business Administration, Hotel Management, Criminal justice and Counseling. The college has categories of their scholarship program: Freshmen scholarship is offered to top 8 best students in each province, the scholarship offers 25% of the tuition fees. The second scholarship is Full USIU scholarships, this program covers not more than 2 students each academic year, the student is given 100% scholarship on the tuition fees, it also covers meals, books and computer lab charges. Cfc Stanbic Bank Academic Scholarship, the banking institution has collaborated with USIU to 4 needy and bright students each year, the applicants must have scored a minimum KCSE grade of B (plain) with C+ in English and Mathematics. The student must be interested in pursuing one of the following Bachelors Degree: Accounting, Information Technology or Business Administration. The two firms pay for the entire tuition fee including medical, library and students body fees. Interviews are conducted in the month of June and the selected students notified in the month of August. The applicant must submit application letter, copies of academic certificates or transcripts which have been certified by the head teacher. The application must be accompanied by a letter from the head teacher detailing your background, the telephone contacts which can reach you and a email address, the degree you will pursue and good reason why you should be considered for the scholarship. Teenage Pregnancy in Kenya amongst school going  girls has become a worrying trend. Young girls drop out of school due to pregnancy and may not continue with their education.

Teenage pregnancy refers to girls becoming pregnant when in either primary school or high school, basically below 18 years of age.This means they have to drop out of school to first take care of themselves and the baby when it is born.These cases of early teenage pregnancy in Kenya have diverse effects not only to the individual but also the community as a whole.

Peer pressure

Most young people trust their peers and are easily influenced to engage in sexual encounters as a way of belong to a group. This may not be spelled out as a ritual but is expected of every member of the group. This is one of the main factors leading to increased cases of teenage pregnancy in Kenya.

Rape

Teenage girls are the most abused age group of women. Rape at this age is in most cases by a person who the girl trusts. This can be a male relative, including biological fathers and step fathers, teachers and domestic workers.

Cultural Practices

Some communities in Kenya marry off young girls from age 10 to men old enough to be their parents. At this tender age, these girls have not being exposure to any form of sexually education and have no clue of what their husbands expect from them. They become baby making machines, so why won’t this be a major contributor to increased cases of Pregnancy in Kenya.

Broken families

Lack of a stable family structure push the girls to look for security else where and this is when they get lured in relationships which have devastating effects on their lives.

Poverty

Due to poverty, girls are forced by their parents to sell their bodies as a source of revenue for the family, just to cater for their basic needs.

Lack of sexual awareness

There is a big difference between the society we were brought up in and the current society in terms of sexual awareness.When I was growing up, sex education was a taboo, we could not talk about it in public not even in schools and neither at home. So most of us were not taught about the changes our bodies were going through not until we joined high school and during biology class that we understood our bodies. This is why majority of us now as parents will not talk to our children about sex and leave them to be educated by media and their peers. This leads to experimenting, so why won’t cases of Pregnancy in Kenya be on the increase.

Abuse of alcohol and drugs

Young people are abusing drugs rampantly and of course this will increase the sexual activities. This is a major contributor to increased cases of under age and unwanted pregnancies.

This a burden all of us as members of the society have to bear, why can’t we be our sisters keeper. We have sisters, daughters, nieces and grandchildren who need us to enlighten them on the dangers of engaging in sexual activities.

School of health sciences is one of the famous schools that deal with training of health care providers. The courses offered at this school trains nurses, pharmacist, medical laboratory technologist, public health officers and medical officers. For instance a course like medicine began in 2008 and it will have the first students graduating at the end of this year (2014).

The medical courses offered at Kenyatta University have been approved by respective boards such as nursing council of Kenya, Kenya medical practitioners and dentist board and pharmacy and poisons board. These courses are offered at full-time basis because it involves a lot of clinical practices.

The undergraduate programmes offered at Kenyatta University (main campus) school of health sciences includes:

For one to qualify for bachelor of medicine and surgery, he/she should have a mean grade of C+ (plus) at K.C.S.E with at least B (plain) in biology, chemistry and English and again at least C+ in mathematics or physics. Those with diploma in clinical medicine and surgery are also eligible for admission. The course takes six years.

Bachelor of Science in nursing takes a duration of four years and it has two programmes in it for the direct entry and those upgrading from diploma to degree.For direct entry, they should have a mean grade of C+ at K.C.S.E with C+ in mathematics or physics, English or Kiswahili, chemistry and biology. Those upgrading, they should have a mean grade of C (plain) with at least C+ in English, biology, chemistry, mathematics or physics alongside diploma in nursing (with two year experience).

The minimum admission requirement for Bachelor of Science in medical laboratory science is the same for those who want to pursue nursing direct after finishing Kenya certificate of secondary education. For those who wish to pursue bachelor of pharmacy, they should have a minimum K.C.S.E grade of C+ with passes in following subjects: biology (B), chemistry (B), physics/mathematics (C+) and English/Kiswahili (B) and this courses five years.
