Mombasa is a defense centre as it is the headquarter of the Kenya navy. It therefore has a defense function. There are also several military barracks in Mombasa.

Many of us Kenyans have been conditioned to study-life! It is well laid out that once we finish our secondary education in Kenya,  what should follow is campus or college, preferably campus. The oldest university established in Kenya was the University of Nairobi, located at the heart of Nairobi City. University of Nairobi was established in 1956 then under the name, Royal College. It however gained a university status in 1970 being the oldest in Kenya. University of Nairobi is a public university that admits over 49,000 students annually in Kenya. The university offers a variety of bachelor courses ranging from Medicine to Arts. The university also offers postgraduate studies for students wishing to enrol Kenya.

Kenyatta University in Kenya, which is located approximately 20kms from the city center on the busy Thika superhighway. The University was established in 1965 but gained university status in 1985 after Moi University in Kenya. Kenyatta University offers many under and post graduate courses in Kenya. They also indulge in e-learning and have a number of satellite campuses all over the country. Kenyatta University has recently established a satellite campus in Dadaab refugee camp in remote parts of Kenya.
 

The Technical University located in the city CBD along Haile Selasie Avenue was a constituent college of University of Nairobi but was given a charter and received a fully-fledged University status in 2013. Daystar University is located towards Ngong/Valley Road in Nairobi. Daystar University in Kenya also has another campus off Mombasa Road. The University is a reputable Christian based institution. Off Langata road is Strathmore Univeristy which also offers accounts related courses such as ACCA and CPA. The Catholic University of East Africa is also located off Langata Road in Nairobi.
