UDA rallies support for Muchina Nyaga ahead of Ol Kalou by-election
Kenya's ruling United Democratic Alliance is deploying its full campaign machinery in Nyandarua County as it targets the Ol Kalou parliamentary seat in the by-election set for July 16, 2026, with officials projecting a comfortable win for the party's candidate.
UDA has rallied behind Muchina Nyaga, its flagbearer for the Ol Kalou constituency seat, which fell vacant following the death of the sitting Member of Parliament. Senior party figures have framed the race as an opportunity to reaffirm UDA's grip on Central Kenya's vote-rich counties in what amounts to the first significant electoral test before the 2027 General Election campaign season.
Officials who addressed supporters at recent campaign events in Nyandarua pointed to the party's structural advantages: a nationwide organising infrastructure refined during the 2022 election cycle, access to the government's ongoing development programmes, and a voter identification database that rivals are unlikely to match. They argued these resources give Nyaga a significant head start against his competitors.
The contest has attracted candidates from DCP, which is fielding former ward MCA Kamau Ngotho, and is expected to draw entrants from other parties within the Azimio coalition. The race is being closely monitored by political analysts as a barometer of both UDA's enduring strength in Central Kenya and DCP's capacity to mount a credible parliamentary challenge ahead of 2027.
Nyandarua County, set within the Aberdare highlands, is a predominantly agricultural area with a strong dairy farming economy. Campaign messaging is expected to focus heavily on localised concerns including milk pricing, fertiliser access under the government's cost-of-living relief agenda, and the persistent poor condition of rural roads connecting farming communities to market centres.
UDA insiders say Nyaga has prioritised door-to-door outreach, building on existing party branch networks to consolidate support before the campaign enters its final phase.
