Battle lines drawn as Ol Kalou poll nominees present papers to IEBC

Candidates vying for the Ol Kalou constituency parliamentary seat have formally submitted their nomination papers to the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission ahead of the June 16 by-election, setting the stage for a contest that is expected to test the relative strengths of the ruling United Democratic Alliance and the Democratic Congress Party.

The seat in Nyandarua County fell vacant following the death of the sitting member of parliament. Ol Kalou, a largely agricultural constituency whose economy revolves around dairy farming and horticulture, has traditionally leaned toward central Kenya political networks, making it a meaningful indicator of UDA's continued hold on the Mount Kenya vote bloc.

DCP, associated with former President Uhuru Kenyatta's political realignment efforts, is fielding a candidate widely seen as a direct challenge to UDA dominance in the region. The party has been building grassroots structures across central Kenya in anticipation of the 2027 general election, and a competitive showing in Ol Kalou would be interpreted as evidence of its growing viability.

IEBC officials confirmed that the nomination process was conducted without major incident and that all candidates met the basic legal requirements for candidacy, including education qualifications under Article 99 of the Constitution.

Campaigns are expected to focus on local infrastructure concerns, including the state of rural access roads, milk collection networks and access to agricultural inputs — issues that consistently rank highly among voters in Nyandarua.

National party heavyweights from both sides are expected to descend on the constituency in the coming weeks. By-elections in Kenya often attract disproportionate campaign spending relative to general elections, and Ol Kalou is unlikely to be an exception.
