Kenya Dengue Outbreak: 1,583 Cases Across Six Sub-Counties

A dengue fever upsurge that began quietly in Garissa County in January 2026 has grown into a multi-county public health emergency, with WHO's Week 25 epidemiological bulletin for June 2026 recording 1,583 cumulative cases and five deaths across six active sub-counties.

Six Sub-Counties, Five Counties, 1,583 Cases

WHO's Week 25 bulletin documented active transmission in six sub-counties spanning five counties: Dadaab in Garissa; Wajir North in Wajir; Mandera South in Mandera; Kilifi South in Kilifi County; Galole in Tana River; and Kibra in Nairobi. A cumulative total of 1,546 specimens had been tested, yielding a 35 percent rapid diagnostic test positivity rate. Five deaths have been recorded: four in Garissa Township and one at Hagadera refugee camp within the Dadaab complex. Garissa County authorities launched a mass fumigation campaign on May 29, 2026.

What Comes Next

The Ministry of Health's DSRU will maintain weekly dengue surveillance reporting to WHO Africa. Updated dengue case management guidelines are expected to be disseminated to health facilities in all six affected sub-counties.
