Cyanide lead, chemicals and forage
Working with the Government Chemist and the University of Nairobi, KWS is running toxicological, microbiological and environmental tests, including water sources. Preliminary laboratory analysis by the University of Nairobi identified cyanide poisoning as the probable cause in cases examined; confirmatory tests continue to verify the finding, map exposure routes and identify the toxic source.
KWS has enlisted the Pest Control Products Board (PCPB) to lead a multi-agency technical team examining whether pesticides or other agricultural chemicals were improperly used, stored or disposed of in Kimana, Kuku, Kitenden and surrounding areas, and whether water, soil or forage was contaminated. Investigators are also testing whether giant star grass (Cynodon plectostachyus), known to produce cyanogenic compounds under certain environmental conditions, may have contributed.
