Kenya Avocados Enter China Under New Zero-Tariff Trade Deal
Kenya has achieved a historic milestone in agricultural trade after the country's first avocado consignment under the new Kenya-China zero-tariff framework cleared Chinese customs. China's Department of African Affairs Director-General Du Xiaohui personally confirmed the inaugural shipment of 6.9 tonnes. The zero-tariff regime, effective May 1, 2026, saw a total of 24 tonnes clear Shanghai port in its opening weeks.
First Shipments Confirm the Framework Is Operational
Du Xiaohui's personal confirmation of the 6.9-tonne inaugural shipment was the first tangible proof that the zero-tariff protocol is working in practice. Beyond avocados, the duty-free window now covers coffee, tea, macadamia nuts, mango, and French beans. Kenya Plant Health Inspectorate Service (KEPHIS) officers worked alongside Chinese customs authorities to verify consignment quality. Exporters projected farm-gate profit margin increases of 15 to 20 percent. The Horticultural Crops Directorate has set a 2026 avocado export target of 130,000 metric tonnes valued at KES 25.4 billion.
What Comes Next
KEPHIS is prioritising the certification of additional pack-houses so that more exporters can access the zero-tariff window before the peak Hass avocado harvest period running from September to November 2026.
