Maraga and Matiangi Push for Opposition Unity Ahead of 2027 Poll

Former Chief Justice David Maraga and Jubilee Deputy party leader Fred Matiangi convened pivotal talks on June 19, 2026, intensifying efforts to consolidate Kenya's fractured opposition into a formidable force capable of challenging President William Ruto in the 2027 general election. The meeting marked one of the most significant steps yet in the United Opposition's campaign to field a single presidential candidate against the incumbent.

A Rally That Changed the Tempo

The June 19 meeting was directly energised by a well-attended opposition rally held in Thika on June 14, 2026. The rally united most of the senior figures aligned with the United Opposition, reinforcing momentum that had been building since the dramatic impeachment of former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua in late 2024.

The Pillars of the United Opposition

The United Opposition brings together Wiper Democratic Movement leader Kalonzo Musyoka, former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, Narc Kenya's Martha Karua, Ford Kenya's Eugene Wamalwa, and former National Assembly Speaker Justin Muturi. Maraga brings unique credibility to the coalition's democratic credentials while Matiangi adds administrative gravitas.

The Question of Candidate Selection

Matiangi publicly indicated he would throw his weight behind whichever candidate emerged from a fair and transparent process. Matiangi, Karua, and Orengo issued a joint statement insisting the candidate selection process would not be a boardroom deal.
