Gachagua tells Kalonzo to tour Nyanza; urges Matiang’i to deepen western push
Key points
- Gachagua urged United Opposition leaders to build nationwide support to challenge President Ruto in 2027.
- He told Kalonzo Musyoka to tour Nyanza, citing 15 years of standing with Raila Odinga’s base.
- He praised Fred Matiang’i’s Kuria outing and asked him to deepen Kisii, Homa Bay and Migori work.
- Gachagua said he will keep consolidating Mt Kenya, Nairobi and other blocs from his Nyeri base.
“I was telling Kalonzo Musyoka yesterday that he supported Raila Odinga and the people of Nyanza for a long time. For 15 years, you stood with them… Help us to make inroads in Nyanza,” Democracy for the Citizens Party leader Rigathi Gachagua said while receiving delegates at his Wamunyo residence in Nyeri, Eastleigh Voice reported.
The former Deputy President is trying to turn United Opposition principals into regional organisers rather than Nairobi talk-show regulars. His target is explicit: expand the map enough to dislodge President William Ruto in the 2027 General Election — a goal that fails if opposition energy stays bottled in a few strongholds.
Assignments on the opposition whiteboard
Kalonzo, in Gachagua’s script, should convert long Nyanza goodwill into active United Opposition machinery. Fred Matiang’i earned a public pat for campaigning in Kuria, Migori County, then a longer to-do list: consolidate there, strengthen Kisii, and push into Homa Bay and Migori as neighbouring counties. Gachagua cast himself as the Mt Kenya and Nairobi consolidator.
Whether those “assignments” are welcomed or resented inside Wiper and Jubilee circles will show in joint rallies — or separate diaries. Opposition coalitions often die on ego collisions long before IEBC nomination day.
2027 maths still unsolved
Nationwide support talk collides with earlier Mt Kenya coalition experiments and open primary fights. Voters will score unity on shared presidential branding and ground logistics, not on complimentary quotes after private lunches in Nyeri.

Opposition ground teams should watch whether joint Kalonzo–Matiang’i–Gachagua events appear on one calendar before 2027 nominations open.
