On Monday Kenyatta University stopped calling him "acting." Council chair Prof Clara S. Momanyi announced Prof John Okumu as substantive Vice-Chancellor after a Public Service Commission process in which he posted 84.5 marks — the top score — Eastleigh Voice reported.
The notice cites Section 35(1)(a)(v) of the Universities Act and concurrence from the Education Cabinet Secretary. Okumu already knew the corridors: ten years as Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic) plus other senior posts, then acting VC from late January 2026 when Prof Paul Wainaina finished an eight-year run marked by leadership fights.
The court detour that delayed the rubber stamp
Recruitment was not quiet. Closest challengers named in reporting included Prof Stephen Odebero and Prof Godfrey Mse. Separately, DVC (Academic) Prof Waceke Wanjohi sued, saying she had scored highest and been unfairly sidelined. In April, Justice Njoki Mwangi issued temporary orders stopping the university from filling the VC seat and directing renewal of Wanjohi's DVC contract — months of uncertainty before Monday's confirmation.
Momanyi asked staff and stakeholders to cooperate as Okumu is sold as a visionary manager for the next growth phase. Students will score him on fees, research output and campus stability, not press releases. A 100-day plan on backlog, security and grants would turn the "well-deserved milestone" into measurable delivery.
What the campus should demand next
Publish a PSC score summary and a public town hall within 30 days. Education desk: Education.
Senate and staff unions can force budget and quality metrics into the open. The High Court file's final status should also be stated plainly so no one confuses a council notice with a settled judgment.
Campus stakeholders should also demand a public calendar for senate meetings, fee policy reviews and research grant targets in the first quarter. Without those anchors, the 84.5 score remains a recruitment story rather than a governance contract with the 2026 academic year.
