Missed University Placement? Here Is Your Second Chance Through KUCCPS

Thousands of Kenyans who sat their Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) examinations between 2022 and 2025 but missed out on university placement now have a fresh opportunity to secure a degree programme — without waiting for the next academic cycle.

The Kenya Universities and Colleges Central Placement Service (KUCCPS) has opened a late application window for Form Four leavers from those cohorts, marking the first time the body has offered instant placement for late degree applications. Eligible candidates who log into the student portal, select an available programme, and complete their application can receive an admission letter on the spot.

KUCCPS Chief Executive Officer Dr. Agnes Mercy Wahome confirmed the development at a sensitisation forum in Migori County on 17 July 2026. “Students are getting instant placement,” she said, urging all qualified candidates who had not yet applied to take advantage of the window without delay.

The late application channel covers programmes offered across 44 public universities and the Open University of Kenya, giving applicants a broad range of institutions and courses to choose from. Students placed through this route will also be eligible for government scholarships and Higher Education Loans Board (HELB) funding — the same financial support available to those placed in the main cycle.

Who qualifies?

• You sat the KCSE examination in 2022, 2023, 2024, or 2025.
• You attained a minimum grade of C+ (C Plus).
• You did not apply for placement during the main application window, or you applied but were not placed in a programme.

How to apply

• Go to the KUCCPS student portal at students.kuccps.ac.ke.
• Log in using your KCSE Index Number, examination year, and password.
• Select the “Late Degree Application” option from your dashboard.
• Browse the available programmes, pick your preferred course and university, and submit your application.

Education Cabinet Secretary Julius Ogamba has underscored the intent behind the initiative, saying “no qualified student should miss out on higher education opportunities simply because they did not submit their applications during the initial placement window.” The late window is part of a wider government drive to raise university enrolment among eligible candidates who fall through the cracks of the standard cycle.

KUCCPS earlier reported that 212,510 students — roughly 79 per cent of eligible 2025 KCSE applicants — had applied by the first deadline, leaving a significant pool of qualified candidates still unplaced. The second-chance window is designed to bring those candidates into the system. Demand for competitive programmes such as Medicine, Nursing, Pharmacy, and Engineering remains high, and applicants should check current availability on the portal, as popular courses fill quickly once the window opens.

KUCCPS has not publicly announced a fixed closing date for this late window. The placement service has urged all interested students to log in and apply as soon as possible rather than risk missing the opportunity a second time.
