Kenya Institute of Special Education is situated at Kasarani, Nairobi County and it’s about 12 km from the Nairobi City Centre off Thika superhighway at Roysambu roundabout near Kasarani police station via ICIPE. It’s a school of its own kind since it mainly teaches student on how to deal with student with special needs.

Kenya institute of special education was established in 1986 through a legal notice by the government of Kenya with the assistance of the Danish Development Agency (DANIDA). The institute is run by a council appointed by Minister for Education, Science and Technology. The head of the institute is the Director who is also the Secretary to the Council.

Training Programs

The institute run two programs namely; full-time and distance learning programs. Recruitment to both programs id done annually. The programs are tailored to give a wholistic education that prepares a student for life-long learner and success in their profession and enhance the institutes role as a pace setter in special needs education in the country.

All the course are skills oriented and highly practical and prepare the graduates to work as:

  • Teachers of special education

  • Educational assessment officers

  • Itinerant teachers

  • Consultants in SNE.

Programs offered include

Full time (residential) program – which takes 2 years for a Diploma course and a 3 month certificate in special need education. Both course cover 4 areas of specialty. These are:

  • Education of person with hearing impairment

  • Educations of person with visual impairment

  • Education of persons with physical and health problems

  • Education of persons who are mentally challenged.

Others are short (Tailored) courses like:

  • Vision support teacher training

  • Sign language/ sign language interpreter

Others courses to be stared soon include;

  • Guidance and Counseling with emphasis on SNE and Disability

  • Educational assessment

  • Orientation and mobility for person with visual impairment
