The school of medicine in the University of Nairobi has been the top most medical school in the republic of Kenya since its establishment in the year 1967. The school (medicine) has been excellent in Kenya in both teaching and research and it has trained many undergraduate since it was formed. The school of medicine is under the college of health sciences in the University of Nairobi alongside other medical courses such as nursing, medical laboratory, pharmacy, public health and dental sciences. This school is located in Chiromo campus of the university of nairobi.

Since university of Nairobi is the best university that offers a degree in medicine (Bachelor of Medicine and Surgery), many students who pass their final examinations after form four (KCSE) complete for admission for this course under the sponsorship of government through the Kenya university and colleges placement services (KUCPS). Masinde Muliro University of science and technology (MMUST) is among the public universities in Kenya and is located in western Kenya, Kakamega town which is a town that is located 57 km from Kisumu town and 42 km from Webuye town. Since Masinde Muliro University is a chartered university in Kenya and also ISO certified, it offers courses in various fields from certificate to doctor of philosophies programmes. The minimum requirement for one to apply for any programme in Masinde Muliro University various from the certificate programme to Ph.D programme. Rusinga Island is home to luo community located in south Nyanza Province. It is surrounded by Lake Victoria and borders Mfangano Island to the south. Estimate population range between 30 000 to 40 000. The main economic activity for the locals is fishing and a little farming. Currently, there is depletion of resources in the island due to exploitation of resources, land degradation, drought, mono cropping and depletion of fish stock in the lake are everywhere; semi arid is the primary climate.

The region is highly affected with HIV epidemic which estimates to 34% of the population infected by HIV/AIDS and is currently leading Nationwide in HIV infection. This has lead to many orphans in the region leaving many children living with their grandparents.

Rusinga Island has four locations namely: Ngodhe Island, kamasengre, wanyama and kakrigu. It has 23 primary schools heavenly distributed within all locations and five public secondary schools namely: kamasengre, kaswanga Girls, St. Joseph Girls and Waware mixed secondary school.

The enrollment rates in these schools vary due to various reasons such as locality. The economy of this region is characterized with poverty with over 50% of the people in extreme poverty. There is also high illiteracy rate and low infrastructure. Teenagers are actively engaged in the fishing activities. Fishing activities serve as the source of livelihood to many families in the area. Since fish is a highly tradable commodity which is in use for many purposes, especially for provision of protein at household level, its price is high a factor which appeals to many fishermen in this case including young school going children who see fishing as a way to quick riches.

 

Population is the total number of people living in area at a given fixed period of time. Kenya’s population is not evenly distributed because some areas are densely populated while some others are not. Kenya’s population is currently approximated to be over 40 million people. The densely populated areas in Kenya are the fertile highlands, major towns, industrial areas and cities. The factors influencing population distribution are;

Areas in Kenya that have fertile soils encourage human settlement example the Kenyan highlands where soils are rich enough to support agricultural practices such as tea and coffee farming. These areas record the highest number of people hence have a higher population density.

Areas that have high amounts of rainfall through the year with proper distribution as well as optimum temperatures are most preferred for settlement by Kenyans. Example is the north eastern province of Kenya which is sparsely populated because of harsh climatic conditions that do not favour human settlement.

High mountains with steep slopes discourage human settlement and farming because the soils in these areas are prone to erosion. Landslides are also common in case of excessive rainfall as experienced in Murang’a County. This makes people move to more productive land. Construction of houses and roads on the slopes is also difficult and costly.

Urban areas attract more people to settle leading to high population densities. People move mainly from rural areas to urban areas in search of employment and better social amenities like schools and hospitals. Employment opportunities have also contributed to the increased population of urban areas.

Areas with industries are densely populated since they offer employment. Thika town in Kiambu County is an example of a town where the population is high because of the many industries that are located in the area.

Pests and diseases also affect the population distribution, areas infested with pests are scarcely populated like the Lambwe valley and Perkerra which are mostly infected by tsetse flies that cause sleeping sickness and are harmful to both human beings and animals.
