This course is going to increase research in the conditions of the eye and increase the quality of care to patients in hospitals in Kenya. The first batch of students in Masinde Muliro University are expected to graduate next year and currently are using Kakamega Provincial General Hospital and Sabatia Eye Hospital as their areas of clinical practice. The total fees paid for this course is Kshs.148,000 for the self sponsored students and Kshs.24,000 for the Government sponsored students. 2.Bachelor of Science in Midwifery (upgrading)

Bachelor of science in Midwifery is a new course not only in Kenya but also in Africa. It is only offered to students who have Diplomas in Nursing, Midwifery, and community. It takes a duration of two and half years and costs Kshs.230,000 per year including tuition fees. The course was introduced by Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology this year (2013) after approval by both Ministry of Education and Nursing Council of Kenya. This course is offered at the main campus (Kakamega). For one to pursue this course, he/she must fulfill the following requirements; Minimum grade of C (plain) at KCSE or Division III at EAE/KCE, Diploma in Nursing, Midwifery, and Community or KRCHN from a recognized institution or equivalent, Must be registered by the Nursing Council of Kenya and holds a current practicing license, Should have a minimum experience of two years.

The introduction of a degree in midwifery will produce qualified health professionals  (midwifes) who will cater for the increase of women seeking maternal services which has been rendered free by the Government of Kenya.

Bachelor of Science in Environmental Studies – this involves the environment and all what encounter them in the real world. It equips the students with knowledge on how to handle situations affecting the environment such as pollution, deforestation and many more situations. The requirements for enrolment is a C+ in KCSE with at least a C+ in Biology, in Mathematics, Chemistry, English and Geography or Physics, or the candidate attained 2 principals and a subsidiary pass at “A” level. Alternatively, a Diploma in a related field can be used to enroll for the course. The course is undertaken in four academic years in the Main Campus and the fee required per academic year is a statutory charge of Ksh 15,750 and Ksh 89,500 for tuition fee.

The National Youth Service in Kenya is a government of Kenya program that offers vocational training to the youths and young people in Kenya. Kenya National Youth Service in Nairobi instills a sense of self worth, patriotism as well as empowering the youth in Kenya to help in safeguard Kenya.

The National Youth Service in Nairobi was established soon after Kenya attained independence, in 1964 so as to train the youths in Kenya in various tasks of national importance. Kenya adopted the 8-4-4 system a few decades ago and up to now the system is still functional. In a few years, it was evident that only few students in Kenya made it to the university level. This trend has changed because almost every student in Kenya is qualifying to the university level with almost 70% admissions to both public and private universities within Kenya yearly. This has been triggered by high demand of jobs in Kenya hence every one now is trying to be competitive.

There are three types of university students in Kenya who are enrolled in both public and private universities in Kenya. The types of students in Kenya include: 1. The JAB (Joint Admissions Board in Kenya) admitted students 2.Those learning through the parallel degree program in Kenya 3.Those studying in private universities in Kenya.

For a student to be admitted to universities in Kenya through JAB, you have to attain the grade required by the Joint Admission Board in Kenya, this grade varies according to how the students have performed or on how much the public universities in Kenya can accommodate on that given year. Secondly, to do a parallel degree program in Kenya, you should have attained a minimum of C+ on your KCSE and a pass in Mathematics and English.
