Seated in the office, my workmate comes in and asks me to lend her my phone. I plug out my earphone and hand her my phone rather bored by the abrupt halt off the discussion heating up on the Classic FM morning Kasheshe show with Maina Kageni and King’ang’i. My work mate Erica makes a call to a friend,

“Hi, I just lost my phone at the bus stop this morning……………..”

Erica then narrates the gory details of how she lost her recently acquired Samsung Galaxy Ace Advance to a thief at the bus stop. She had been on call when someone suddenly hit her phone from behind. By the time she looked back to see who had done that, another thief of the same cohort had already picked the phone and disappeared into the multitude. Erica had saved up a whooping 27,000 Kenyan shillings of her peanut student stipend to acquire the phone that she had been longing for, for a long time. Trying to cool her down, I tell her of a similar incidence where my brother got mugged on Chiromo road off the busy Waiyaki way and lost his Samsung Galaxy S II worth 45,000 Kenyan shillings to the thieves.

Phone theft is a very rampant crime in the streets of Nairobi. Just the other day, I almost fell victim to the same. A well dressed lady had opened the outer side pocket of my handbag whilst we were scrambling for a matatu on the crowded Umoja bus terminal along Ronald Ngala Street. Luckily I turned around and caught her before she could put her sticky hands into my bag pocket. The most shocking thing was how smartly she was dressed. Anybody would have passes her off as a normal woman going home after a long day in an office.

Another of my friends got pick pocketed at the Tom Mboya-Accra road junction and lost her phone and cash. She was lucky enough to meet a friend who paid for her bus fare home.

Being on the streets of Nairobi requires one to be very alert and more so with items such as phones, purses and handbags. Being a crowded city, thieves can snatch your belongings and get into the crowds of people without a trace. Areas such as Muthurwa and Gikomba require extra care. Thieves here are more “professional” and can even cut out the straps to your bag whilst still carrying it.

I would highly advise anyone not to make or receive any call in these high risk areas if possible. When answering a call, make sure that you are very aware and alert on your surroundings and especially those behind you. Carefully tuck in your phone in your bag or in pockets of a fitting trouser and most importantly, be alert! Lower town areas from Riveroad are also a high risk area. Crowded areas such as Kencom, Ngara market and Tea Room should be avoided if possible. If you need to visit these areas it is wise to be in the company of a friend or two. They will look out for you and warn you of any impending theft.

Be warned!!

Online dating,is it for you or a foreign concept

Online dating,is it for you or a foreign concept

by Brenda Mareri

Single, lonely, tired of watching couples all around you frolicking away all smiles and all you do is cringe. Most of us are all there, stuck in a rut.  Tried dating and you can’t get the right fit. Of late I have been seeing online advertisements for local Kenyan dating websites giving us hope to meet a soul mate.

As a typical traditional Kenyan, with Luhya blood streaming through me online dating is a foreign concept. Who will I meet? Why are they searching online? Is it that hard to find a mate? I think I prefer the old school style of bumping into a Karanja or Okello at the bus stop and hitting it off. Going down to the local pub and making sure my dance floor skills can pop an eye or two.

Dating online is traversing into the unknown realms, not knowing who is sitting at the opposite end of the computer typing away. Is what the other person saying about themselves genuine or is it a psychopath hunting for his next victim.

Is the concept of traditional dating and online dating the same? Or do I just need to get with the times and adjust to the digital era. Or is it just making things too easy for us, just a click of a button and you have a date.

Are we just too lazy to put ourselves out there, away from the facade of the internet and risk rejection?  To answer all my questions I signed up on a site as a single and browsed through my potential matches. There was great variety, eye candy and eye sores. After a few minutes, I decided to chat up a few and it was strange trying to share information about yourself with a complete stranger.

At the end of it all I decided that online dating and my preferred traditional mode of dating could just be the same, personal preference would be the difference. Would you rather have all your possible options a click of a button away or would you prefer the hustle of chasing after your potential partner like in the good old days. Well am not referring to chasing the girl down to the river and hoisting her away on your back, but just the plain old game of cat and mouse.

How To Find Apartments To Rent Online In Kenya

Nowadays, most Kenyans prefer to rent and live in apartments due to the bad conditions of the housing market in Kenya. It is quite cumbersome to start looking for a house to rent in most areas in Nairobi and Kenya at large while walking and searching for empty apartments.  Most Kenyans even opt to tell friends and colleagues that they are searching for a rental for them to help out. But with the increased technology in Kenya, one now can just search for a house to rent in any part of the city of Nairobi and some other major towns like Nakuru, Eldoret, Kisumu, Naivasha, etc. To get a house online which is being rented, you need to have access to the internet and search through the newspaper websites on real estate’s up for rent, through realtor sites and other places on the internet with the listings.

A listing will have a description of the available houses for renting, contact information for requests and queries like email addresses or phone numbers and a clear description of the area of rental houses are located in Kenya. Finding a rental in Nairobi and estates in Nairobi could not get easier. Renting a house in other parts of Nairobi is also made easier by the presence of online adverts for houses to rent.  However, a person should not pay for rental spaces in Kenya without first seeing the house. Yes, there is the risk of being tricked off your cash. First see the house you will pay for and make arrangements from there.

For a person in Kenya looking for a rental space to efficiently use the online services, there is the need to have made a decision on the type of apartment you need. You need to decide how many bedrooms, bathrooms and such characteristics of the rental house you want. This makes it faster to narrow down your search and makes it even easier. You also need to have made a decision of the area you want to rent. For instance, in Nairobi city, you could decide on places such as Nyayo Estate, along Thika road, Umoja estate, Lavington area, Langata, Mombasa road, Jogoo road etc. Being that specific helps your house for rent hunt easier and drives you towards a particular area.

A person searching for a rental space in Kenya should also have made a decision on the budget. The amount you can afford to pay fro for the period of renting. A person should also be aware of the conditions of renting a house in Kenya. This includes paying deposits for up to three months in some areas, water and electricity deposits. Making a decision of the amount of rent you want to pay for the described house you searching for rental purposes online narrows down the search. For instance, a person’s search in Kenya websites can be ‘2 bedroom houses in Kitengela area for shs 13,000’. This way you will find listings that favour your preferences.

Orange Kenya And DIPEK: Is This Another Pyramid Scheme In Kenya?

Orange Kenya is a telecommunications company in Kenya and has had great success in the provision of the internet but not in the call/ mobile sector in Kenya. Orange Kenya has been unable to cope up with the stiff competition from the mobile industry players in Kenya such as Safaricom and Airtel Kenya. The number of Orange SIM card subscribers in Kenya is at number three, the first being Safaricom and the second being Airtel in Kenya. But in their bid to stay ahead of the game, Orange Kenya have come up with a new multilevel marketing scheme that is similar to GNLD in Kenya and the like as a way of rewarding Orange users and subscribers in Kenya.

Working in conjunction with Pillar Technologies in Kenya, Orange Kenya have found a way of rewarding subscribers who use Orange services in Kenya as well as those who introduce others to using Orange in Kenya. The Orange initiative is known as DIPEK in Kenya. DIPEK initiative in Kenya requires that you invest in Kshs 2,750. Out of this initial investment, Kshs 500 is converted to Orange airtime of that amount. If you get to introduce a new person to Orange services in Kenya, they invest the same amount; Kshs 500 is converted to airtime while Kshs 200 is given to your orange money line in Kenya. If they introduce a new person, you get to earn Kshs 150 while the other person gets to take Kshs 200. This goes on until the twelfth generation with your cash rewards remaining at fifty from the fourth generation onwards.

Further, for every Kshs 500 of credit your down-lines use, you get to earn 2.5 shillings. This means that if you manage to get one 1,000 people to your network, and they use Kshs 1,000 worth of air time and not five hundred shillings, you get to earn five thousand shillings worth of passive income from DIPEK program in Kenya.  If your network grows to two hundred and fifty people, you are rewarded with ten thousand shillings to start a business of your own. The hard part to all this is getting people to join your network and making your down-lines to become enthusiastic about getting others to join the team. Also once you have managed to grow a network of five thousand people, you get twenty five thousand shillings of passive income form DIPEK initiative in Kenya.

Although DIPEK initiative in Kenya is good, the major challenge that Orange Kenya faces is its infrastructure. Orange network in Kenya is not available in some parts of the country therefore taking this idea to others may seem a difficult task. Because of the huge response it is getting, you find yourself having to try to call more than once. Calls cannot easily go through in Orange network in Kenya. Also, Orange internet connection in Kenya is also poor in some parts of Nairobi. In as much as this is a well thought out plan, Orange Kenya did not foresee a situation where their current infrastructure would be overloaded with Orange subscribers in Kenya.

It also begs the question, is this DIPEK payment plan in Kenya sustainable if new subscribers don’t come on board? Tell us is this DIPEK program in Kenya a great Network Marketing program or just another pyramid scheme waiting to bust its bubble? Only time will tell us so.
