Coster Ojwang's 'Fisherman's Experience' brings ambitious creative, civic programme to Bondo

Coster Ojwang, the Kenyan multidisciplinary artist known for weaving cultural storytelling with community engagement, is set to transform Bondo town in Siaya County into a creative hub with the latest edition of his signature event, Fisherman's Experience.

The three-day festival is built around the town's identity as a fishing community on the shores of Lake Victoria — an economic and cultural lifeline for millions in western Kenya. Ojwang has consistently used the event to challenge the assumption that world-class arts programming belongs exclusively in Nairobi.

This year's lineup features some of the most recognisable names in Kenyan music and performance, including rapper Octopizzo, afro-fusion act Watendawili, singer Serro, and veteran entertainer Dola Kabarry. The mix of contemporary and traditional performers reflects Ojwang's broader ambition to bridge generational tastes while foregrounding local identity.

Beyond the performances, the festival incorporates a civic programme designed to engage residents on pressing community issues, from environmental conservation of Lake Victoria's ecosystem to youth unemployment — a chronic challenge in Siaya County, where graduate joblessness remains significantly above the national average.

Mentorship sessions will run alongside the music, with artists and creative industry professionals offering guidance to young people from Bondo and surrounding sub-counties. Organisers say participants will have access to workshops covering music production, visual arts, and content creation.

Ojwang has described the event as proof that grassroots arts investment can anchor civic dialogue. For Bondo, a town frequently overlooked in national cultural planning, Fisherman's Experience represents both entertainment and a sustained argument for equitable creative development outside the capital. Ticket and programme details are available through the organiser's official social media channels.
