Former President John Magufuli's mother Suzana Magufuli dies after illness
The mother of Tanzania's late President John Pombe Magufuli has passed away following an extended illness, her family confirmed from their home in Chato, a small town in the Geita Region of northwestern Tanzania.
Suzana Magufuli was widely known in Tanzania as the matriarch of one of the country's most prominent political families. Her son John Magufuli, who served as Tanzania's fifth president from 2015 until his death in March 2021, was a towering figure in East African politics whose policies significantly shaped relations with neighbouring Kenya.
During his presidency, Magufuli pursued infrastructure and economic projects with direct implications for the East African Community, including negotiations over the Standard Gauge Railway corridor and cross-border trade regulations with Kenya. His administration maintained a complex but generally functional relationship with Nairobi, particularly around the Namanga border crossing, one of the busiest land ports between the two nations.
Suzana Magufuli had largely stayed out of the public spotlight throughout her son's political career and following his passing. Her death comes five years after John Magufuli died in office under circumstances that prompted wide speculation across the region. The Tanzanian government at the time attributed his death to heart complications.
Chato, where the family maintained their roots, is a lakeside district near Lake Victoria, a body of water shared by Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda, underscoring the close geographic and cultural ties binding the East African region together.
Burial arrangements were being coordinated by the family as of the time of publication, with condolences flowing from political figures across the continent.
