Murkomen: Government to step up war on goonism

Interior and National Administration Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen has issued a stern warning to individuals fuelling political violence and goonism across the country, vowing that the government will pursue them with renewed vigour. The CS made the declaration during a church service held in Mt. Elgon, Bungoma County, a region that has historically contended with land-related clashes and organised criminal activity along its rugged borderlands.

Speaking candidly to the congregation, Murkomen did not mince his words. "I promise you, just pray for me, I'll deal with those people one by one," he told worshippers, drawing applause from the gathered faithful. The remarks signal a hardening of the government's posture towards those who deploy violence for political ends — a menace that has long disrupted livelihoods and undermined stability in parts of western Kenya and beyond.

The CS outlined the government's intention to escalate lawful measures aimed at safeguarding ordinary citizens from politically instigated threats. He stressed that security agencies would be empowered to act swiftly and within the bounds of the law, reassuring residents that the heavy hand of impunity would no longer be tolerated. Murkomen's appearance in Bungoma was widely read as a signal that the national government is paying close attention to security dynamics in the Mt. Elgon area, where stability has remained a persistent concern for successive administrations.

Beyond the crackdown on goonism, Murkomen took time to commend local security officers and community stakeholders for their ongoing efforts to combat drug abuse and other criminal enterprises taking root in the region. He acknowledged that the fight against narcotics and crime required a coordinated approach involving both government institutions and ordinary citizens, and encouraged residents to continue collaborating with law enforcement rather than shielding offenders.

The church service brought together a cross-section of leaders and state officials, underlining the gravity of the occasion. Among those present were members of parliament, a senator, and senior officials from the National Authority for the Campaign Against Alcohol and Drug Abuse (NACADA) — a gathering that reflected the multi-agency nature of the government's response to security and social challenges in the county. NACADA's presence in particular pointed to growing concern over substance abuse as a driver of criminal behaviour among the youth in the Mt. Elgon corridor.

Murkomen's pledge comes at a time when Kenyans in various parts of the country are growing increasingly impatient with political violence that disrupts elections, intimidates opponents, and leaves communities living in fear. Whether the CS's tough talk will translate into tangible action on the ground remains to be seen, but his visit to Bungoma County and the directness of his message have at least signalled that the Interior docket is alive to the threat that organised goonism poses to Kenya's hard-won peace.
