KDF Uncovers Four IEDs in Lamu, Foiling Multiple Terror Plots Along Supply Routes

Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) troops deployed under Operation Amani Boni have recovered and destroyed four improvised explosive devices (IEDs) in Lamu County, successfully disrupting multiple suspected terror plots targeting critical supply routes in the region.

The explosives were found in the Sarira area, a stretch of terrain that serves as a key corridor for both civilian movement and military logistics. According to KDF, the first device was detected during a dominance, route-clearance and link-up patrol — a standard procedure conducted regularly by forces in the area to degrade insurgent capabilities and protect road users from roadside bomb threats.

Subsequent operations in the days that followed led to the discovery of three additional devices distributed along the same routes. The IEDs were spaced at distances of approximately 5.1 kilometres, 8.27 kilometres, and 8.4 kilometres apart, indicating a deliberate and coordinated effort to interdict movement along the corridor. Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) specialists attached to Operation Amani Boni responded to each find, carrying out controlled detonations that safely neutralised all four devices without injury to personnel or damage to equipment.

No casualties were reported during any of the recovery operations.

KDF confirmed that the discoveries foiled multiple planned attacks before they could be carried out. The positioning of the devices along major supply routes suggests the intended targets included both military convoys and civilian transport — a pattern consistent with tactics employed by armed groups seeking to destabilise the Lamu borderlands.

No specific organisation was named in the KDF communiqué, though the Lamu-Boni Forest area has for years been an active operational zone where security forces have repeatedly confronted militants who target road networks and remote communities along the coast and northeastern frontier.

Military security observers note that a heavy reliance on IEDs can reflect a degradation in a group's capacity to mount conventional assaults, with roadside bombs serving as a lower-risk means of disrupting movement and spreading fear among civilian populations. The recovery of four devices during a single operational sweep underscores the active and sustained intelligence-led patrolling being conducted by KDF units across the county.

Operation Amani Boni — which translates broadly as "Peace in Boni" — has been running for several years as Kenya's primary counter-insurgency effort in the coastal and northeastern frontier zones. It draws on combined arms units alongside specialist EOD teams equipped to handle precisely the kind of buried, concealed threat encountered in the Sarira area.

KDF called on communities in Lamu County to remain vigilant and to promptly report any suspicious objects or unusual activity to the nearest security post, stressing that civilian cooperation remains central to detecting and neutralising threats before they can claim lives.
