Gideon Moi promises to reveal details of talks with Ruto
Kenya African National Union Chairman Gideon Moi has confirmed that he held substantive discussions with President William Ruto, but declined on Tuesday to disclose the content of those talks, saying the matters involved were of a serious enough nature to warrant careful and deliberate public communication.
Moi, son of former President Daniel arap Moi and one of the country's most closely watched political figures given Kanu's historical significance in Kenyan politics, told reporters that he would make the details known through an appropriate public forum once the time was right. He gave no specific timeline for when that statement might come.
The confirmation of the meetings has fuelled speculation about a possible political realignment ahead of the 2027 general election cycle, in which Ruto is expected to seek a second term. Kanu, though diminished from its era as Kenya's sole legal party, retains symbolic influence and a membership base in parts of the Rift Valley, particularly in Baringo County, which Gideon Moi represented in the Senate for years.
Political analysts have noted that Ruto has been systematically broadening his coalition since taking office in 2022, drawing in figures from across the political spectrum including former rivals. Conversations between the presidency and Kanu would fit within that broader consolidation strategy, though it remains unclear what terms, if any, have been discussed.
Gideon Moi has maintained a comparatively low profile in national politics since his unsuccessful bid for the Baringo gubernatorial seat in 2022, making his re-emergence in conversations about a Ruto alliance particularly notable to political observers.
The opposition and civil society commentators have called on Moi to be transparent about the discussions, arguing that political negotiations of national consequence should not be conducted behind closed doors.
