Nairobi Hospital Director Dr Job Obwaka is dead

Kenya's medical community is mourning the loss of Dr Job Obwaka, a gynaecologist whose career spanned more than five decades and who served as a director of Nairobi Hospital until his death. He was 83.

Dr Obwaka died at Nairobi Hospital, the private institution in Nairobi's Upperhill neighbourhood that serves as a referral centre for patients from across East Africa. His family confirmed the passing in a statement, though details surrounding the precise cause of death remain subject to an active police investigation, with a postmortem examination yet to be concluded.

Born and raised in Kenya's western region, Dr Obwaka pursued medical training at a time when access to specialist education was profoundly constrained by colonial structures. He later concentrated on obstetrics and gynaecology, disciplines carrying enormous social weight in a country historically burdened by high rates of maternal and neonatal mortality. Over the course of his career he is credited with performing thousands of deliveries and nurturing a generation of specialists who went on to staff public and private hospitals nationwide.

His role on the board of Nairobi Hospital placed him at the intersection of clinical practice and institutional governance during a period of rapid expansion in Kenya's private healthcare sector. Colleagues say he used that position to advocate for better working conditions for junior doctors and for sustained investment in diagnostic infrastructure at a time when many facilities struggled with basic equipment shortages.

Memorial services are being arranged by his family, who have requested privacy while the investigation continues. The Kenya Obstetrical and Gynaecological Society issued a formal statement describing his passing as an irreplaceable loss to the profession and to the patients whose lives he shaped over more than half a century.
