How To Wear To The Office In Kenya; Appropriate Office Jewellery

It is Tuesday, and sassy Sally hastily struts into her office premises in Kenya. With a folder in hand she has to get to her office in Nairobi, do a few emails before attending the crisis meeting with the human resource officer in charge of organizational management. Luckily, she got to the office in Nairobi in time, thanks to her carefully tucked PDA that buzzes to Merimela every week day at 6am- religiously. Sally had forgotten about the pop up mail she received yesterday on her Outlook window notifying her of the intended meeting. She had left the office a tad bit early, feeling rather sickly on account of her wild weekend escapades.

Sally is adorned in a bright blue blouse and orange chingo pants. To say that she likes colour is an understatement. She has a “teardrop” statement necklace and an orange strapped watch to match with her pants. On her left arm are three chunky bangles in a mix and match colour sequence. She also has a pair of drop chandelier earrings dangling down her robes and 6 inch Jimmy Choo heels that are doing a bad job at maintaining the serene silence in the corridor as she struts to her office on the first floor.

This gets me thinking, “What is the appropriate way to dress to an office in Kenya?”

Most NGOs in Kenya do not have guidelines on choice of clothes to wear to the office and as such one can wear practically anything. In fact one of my friends who works in an NGO in the suburbs of Nairobi was asked to wear anything that makes her comfortable on her first day at work.

Chunky and noisy statement pieces are however a downright NO! NO! The bright coloured earrings and necklaces should be kept for the weekends and not to the office in Nairobi. Earrings should at best be kept to say diamond, gold or silver studs. Hoop earrings are allowed on a dress down Friday if need be. Earrings should be most unobtrusive and pendant necklaces as simple as they can get. An occasional tennis bracelet can also be worn if necessary.

Six, or is it nine, inch shoes in Nairobi are not very formal- and more so in our Kenyan set up. We would all agree that a nice polished pair of a two or a three inch heel is more formal than a six inch pair of metal studded Louis Vuitton shoes. Stiletto heels are and strappy hells look attractive on a date and not as office wear. Ladies do everything in moderation. Heels that shockingly exaggerate your height or leave your calf muscles sticking out and mistakable for a marathoners’ are not the way to go. Clearly, I am no fashion guru but I think ladies need to differentiate an office in Nairobi from a bar of a club in Nairobi, and a week day from a week end. I am not saying colour is bad-but do it with moderation. Anyone who meets you on the street should be able to tell that you are going to an office- not to “Rumours” on the busy Moi Avenue.

Image matters!

How To Manage A Bad Hair Day In Kenya

Your long time friend calls you for a new movie showing at IMAX on Saturday afternoon In Nairobi. You are clad in that fancy blue chino pants, and a matching top that shows your just healed tattoo. Everything seems perfect save for your hair that looks like a ball of cotton wool. Let’s face it; we have all experienced those days a look at the mirror attests to having passed through a hurricane! Bad hair days are every girl’s nightmare in Nairobi, especially on those days when you need to step out. You have to scurry for a fast solution. The financial strain leave alone the time we need in a salon contribute to extended periods of bad hair in Kenya.  Here are a few quick ways to fix this hitch.

1)    Talcum Powder

Talcum powder is efficient for those scalps that look like you just stepped out from an oil rig. For greasy looking hair, the need for talcum powder is vital. Pour a generous amount of talcum powder on your hands and spread it evenly over your hair. This not only adds volume to your hair but also seeps up the excess moisture and grease on your hair. However you best be careful on how much powder you apply. Too much will cause a whitish sheen and too little won’t make any difference.

2)    Focus points

For hair in bad shape,  it is best to take the focus off your hair.  To do this, use hair accessories such as headbands and barrettes or fancy clips. Colored hair bands and butterfly clips for instance can be used on hair held in a ponytail for a fun day. This will put more focus on the accessories and less on the bad hair.

3)    Hats

Wear hats to conceal that bad hair. You can rest assured that this look will do the magic. Cowboy hats and fedora hats are big during this time. Team your fedora with fitting jeans and a classy top. A pair of boots completes the look.

4)     Bed Head look

If you cannot tidy up that hair, then mess it up the more. Creating some lazy messed up curls on your head to give a “just out of bed” look works magic. You can spice it up by putting on a plain headband with a bow perhaps, and you are good to go. Make sure that your hair is clean to pull off this look. You can spruce it by applying generous amounts of hair oil for that final finish.

5)    Tie it up

This is one of the most used methods to tidy up hair. It is the most common method used in Nairobi. Make sure that your hair is not tied up in a scrunch. Chic styles work better. For a laid back look, you can tie your hair loosely at the back and leave some strands to your face. Then add that hair scarf, tied in a bow and ensure that it will be secured.

Now ladies, you got no reason to miss that movie, even with your bad hair.

TIPS ON HOW TO WEAR BRIGHTER COLOURS THIS TIME ROUND Colour is hot!

TIPS ON HOW TO WEAR BRIGHTER COLOURS THIS TIME ROUND Colour is hot!

by Lucy Wanjiku Mwangi

There some tips on what to wear, how and where to wear it. Start with what you already have-dig out those fun pieces that you haven’t worn in years and join me in this journey of eclectic style. I know, all too well that there is a budding fashion enthusiast in every one of you. However, the most important thing I must emphasize when incorporating fashion trends into your wardrobe is not to go ballistic and change your entire wardrobe! That is my personal disclaimer to you. Find ways to work with what you have and add to it by getting one or two signature pieces and accessories in the latest trend. I also urge people to start embracing the African and Kenyan styles.

These local fashion designers are more attractive and brings out beauty of our culture and not only that, you get your own unique pieces and the local designers are keeping up with the international designers to keep you up to date. This time around I want us to experiment with colour. Colour is hot! Bright, bold, ‘in your face’ colour! Remember when you were four years old, and you’d try to run to the end of the rainbow just so that you could touch it? Remember when the most fascinating toy you had probably was the brightest in the lot? Well, this time around I would like us to dig deep and bring out the inner child that is in all of us- the one that simply fascinated by colour- and adorn yourself. When am talking of colour, I mean the primary and secondary colours, your rainbow colours.

The brighter the colour, the more exciting, cheerful and fun it is. The interesting part about wearing colour in this day and age is that it doesn’t have to match. You could go monochrome which is different shades of the same colour, or you can wear contrasting colours which are complete opposites, or you could go with complementary colours, which is combining colours which obviously go well together. So there is no need to fear the colourful trend- it works any way you put it together.

My personal favourites are John Kaveke’s turquoise blue linen suit matched with a completely contrasting orange shirt; Poisa’s yellow high waist shorts with a blue and yellow top and these Kenyan designed shoes by John Kaveke and Afro Street collections.

Well when it comes to going out, to dinner parties, to office parties, family functions, festive parties, and the many random cocktail parties start to build up some outfits from you got in your wardrobe. This means your social life is in existent! Though it can be hard to decide what to wear and where to wear it, but trust me, its not just you feeling flustered, everyone is!

What can you wear to stand out in a crowd or to add a little flair to a seemingly dull outfit? Well, fashion designer Bill Blass, put it best by saying, “when in doubt, wear RED.” Red is not only exciting, stimulating and sensuous colour, but is also the epitome of most festivities and one of the main colours in trend at the moment. The cynic reading this may be thinking whether it’s not too clichéd to wear red in most occasions and during festive seasons such as Christmas and Easter, but take it from me- it’s not! It’s actually pretty awesome. I’m not too sure I would say the same for valentine day though.

If you really to stand out in the crowds, you would rather go for the brighter colours and match the outfit with appropriate heels. However, if you are not that courageous, don’t be disheartened, break the outfits apart and match them with your favourite neutral pieces. You could also add shades of red into your look with the right accessories.

What to relax in during your time off, I suggest toning down the colour just a tad. However, keep the fabrics light and fun. Breathable fabrics such as cotton, linen, chiffon and silk are not only the most appropriate for Kenyan weather, but they also come in more vibrant and exciting cuts. You want the flexibility of lazing around and or running up and down with the younger ones but still look like you put some thought into your outfit. When it comes to kid’s fashion, the rainbow is the limit! I suggest taking the risk and letting them to select what they want to wear because remember, with colour you can’t really go wrong. The kids need to be kept in fun cotton pieces they can run around in and get as dirty as they wish.

There are also a lot of accessories also available, feel free to throw them on and bring out the future fashionista in them. Imagine, you are in your nice linen outfit on a chilled sunny day, and you top it all off with a white hat. Simply fabulous! What else can I say- you just have to have a killer pair of shades (or two) to complete your look.

how to tie a chic scarf in kenya 1

How To Tie A Chic Scarf In Kenya

Call it a neck wrap or a muffler-this is a piece of fabric that not only protects your neck from the chilly July weather in Kenya but also accessorizes that cool top you bought from Toi market in Nairobi. There are so many Do It Yourself (DIY) hacks for scarves that help you wrap it up. The various ways of tying a scarf however depends on the length as well as the design of the scarf. It also depends on the place of wear. Short scarfs would ideally not be best suited for similar wrap ups as more lengthy scarfs. Mostly in Kenya, scarfs are tied according to where and with whom you meeting. You would not tie a scarf in the office the same way you would while going out to a club.  Here are a few tips to wrap up that scarf. Seven ways to a chic scarf wear

1)    The Classic Drape

Just like the words, the scarf is left to simply drape on your chest area. Take a scarf and pit it on your neck, leaving the two ends to drape in equal length. The classic drape works for all kinds of scarfs.

2)    The Modern Loop

This is a slight modification to the classic drape. It is best suited for medium to lengthy scarfs. Just place the scarf on your neck in a way that both ends hang to your chest area. Hold one end of the hanging scarf and pull it over behind your neck and to the front again. Make sure that the two hanging ends are equal in length.

3)    The Bunny Ear

Like in the modern loop, tie the scarf round your neck to its full length. Take the end, (after looping) and put it through the last loop on your neck. Pull it slightly to meet the other end of the scarf and tie a knot. Then adjust the loops accordingly for a neat finish.

4)    The Double Rainbow

The double rainbow works on scarfs that have two different colors say white on one side and black on the other. Tie your scarf as in the modern loop ensuring that the loops show only one color. In this case black. The turn the hanging ends such that they show the other color, in this case white. This means that your neck will be covered in black loops and hanging will be white ends.

5)    The Turtle Neck

Tie the scarf round your neck to its full length. Take the two ends at the front and tie two knots to secure the scarf in place. Finally to conceal the remaining ends material, tuck them under the loops.

6)    Infinity

Place the lengthy scarf on your neck such that the ends drape to your chest area as in the classic drape. Take the two ends and knot them securely. Then twist the scarf midway and slip the newly formed loop over your head, such that the knots finally lie at the back of the neck.

7)    The toss

Place the scarf on your neck as in the classic drape design. The get one of the draping ends and throw it over your shoulder such that one end of the scarf drapes at the front whilst the other drapes on your back.

These are just a few of the easiest ways to wrap your scarf the Kenyan style. Try them out and enjoy.

How to attain an hourglass body shape

How to attain an hourglass body shape

by

How to lose belly fat??? Getting rid of cellulite??These are some of the most searched topics on Google and more so by the female counterparts. Having that hour glass shape popularly referred to as ‘figure 8’ is something that all girls would die for.  An hour glass shape is defined where the bust and hip measurements are at least ten inches wider than the waist. Think hourglass, think Kenyan Vera Sidika! Vera has a wasp waist coupled with a full upper and lower endowment. That is the kind of body shape that all Nairobi girls would want to have-right?

We have on the other extreme, the dreaded muffin top shape. I tend to think that this is a somewhat funny name. Muffin top? Really? Anyway, this is the effect created by tight low rise trousers that sit on your hips. The lower back flesh tends to form a tyre? And falls over the waist n walaaaa! A muffin top! This is the most dreaded of body shapes.

Body shapes are in most cases gene defined, but you can work to almost get an hour glass shape. Corset training is an extreme solution whereby your waist gets reduced by inches. Then of course there is the lipo-sunction option which I do not advocate for. Going the natural is always the best way.

Dressing the part! Yes, this is a key component of image. To achieve that coveted hourglass shape accentuates your waist by wearing belts and clothes that nip in at the waist. The right clothes can definitely create the illusion of a tiny waist. Jackets with padded shoulders also tend to add bulge to the upper torso and create a tiny waist illusion

Always opt for high rise jeans as opposed to low cut jeans. Low rise jeans usually push up even the least of belly fat thus creating a muffin top shape. High rise jeans however sit above your hips and ensure that any visible fat is well tucked in. Dark coloured jeans also tend to complement curvy figures. They make the legs appear slimmer and the bum wider helping you achieve the hourglass shape.  Lighter colours are best suited on slimmer silhouettes.

Wearing properly fitting clothes to reveal that created hourglass works magic. High heels are a perfect accompaniment to this image. High heels generally tend to lift the bum and cause the legs to look longer and better toned. High heels give a woman a good posture and an awesome wiggle. If you can, try out a pair of three inch shoes with this figure!

Finally, well fitting push up bras are the last add on to this look. These work well especially for women who are not much endowed. Hour glass figures are known for their fuller busts. A bra with an under wire helps in lifting the bust while a padded bra helps to increase bust size in appearance.

Girls, therein lies the secret.  It is time to work the magic, without necessarily killing yourselves in the gym.

How to dress your body shape

How to dress your body shape

by

1b6fafa6ecWe have all been gifted with different body types. The fact that I may be slender does not mean that the other person who is full figured looks bad; they perhaps just don’t know how to dress their body shape to make it more appealing.

The Pear Shaped Figure

This figure means that the top, shoulders and bust are smaller than the hips. For this figure avoid clinging skirts and pants. Instead go for wide bottom pants, skirts that are A-shaped and chose dark coloured pants and skirts. Choose light coloured tops. Jackets and tops should just cut off at the beginning of the hips and anything longer will emphasise the hips. Slender belts would work better. Try pointed toe shoes to elongate your legs. Your best assets are your arms show them off!

The Hour Glass Figure

This is definitely the ideal figure and you could get away with almost anything. Your best asset is your waist. Any kind of belt would definitely do the trick. Dresses often go well with this body type.

The Rectangle

This is the boyish look where the hips, waist and bust are the same size. Tops with collars, ruffles or frills always work well. Wear long jackets to even the masculine look. Go for colourful clothes to create that girlie image. Dresses and skirts that are knee length are also good for your shape.

The Wedge/ Inverted Triangle Body Shape

This body type means that the shoulders and bust are bigger than the hips. Avoid Spaghetti Strap and boat neck line tops, instead choose empire tops. Go for high waist styles choosing bright colours for bottoms and dark colours for tops. Short skirts and dresses often do the trick. Flared pants are also good for taking attention away from the upper body. Your greatest assets are your legs and waist find ways of showing them off.

In fashion it is not about what to tuck in or chip off, instead it is about using and maximising your assets and taking away focus from your weak areas. It is about choosing the best colours and shoes and after getting it right on the colours and styles add a touch of confidence and walk the streets like a million dollars. That is how you create that wow image.

How To Shop For Cheap Clothes In Gikomba Market In Nairobi, Kenya

Once upon a time Kenyans discovered the clothes treasure market, that is Gikomba in Nairobi. Young and old, male and female all found joy in accessing cheap clothes in Kenya that were still highly fashionable. At first, those who flocked the Gikomba market in Nairobi were poor Kenyans looking for cheap fashionable clothes. Before long, however, the middle class joined in on the buying of cheap clothes in Nairobi. But alas! So did the money hungry ‘entrepreneur’ businessmen in Kenya. Business dealers in clothes in Kenya wake up before the sun rises and set out to buy clothes in bulk from Gikomba Market in Nairobi. Then they set up shops and stalls all over Gikomba and wait for the unsuspecting shoppers. These business people in Kenya elevate the prices of clothes so much that you would be better off buying brand new clothes from stalls in Nairobi city centre. So how can you escape from the clutches of these business men and locate the cheap clothes in Gikomba Market, and still get inexpensive fashionable clothes while at it? Preparation is the key.

Clothes you put on to Gikomba Market

You want to shop for inexpensive clothes, but you are wearing a designer from a well known Nairobi clothes stall– that will not aid your quest. Dress the part! And by this I mean take out that pair of jeans that you should have thrown but somehow you keep holding on to. Take out that t-shirt that should not even be in your closet. Finally, put on a well worn jacket to complete the look. If you can add on a headscarf the better!

Shoes to wear to Gikomba Martket

The type of shoes you choose to wear to shop in Gikomba in Kenya is very vital. Gikomba Market in Nairobi is located past Muthurwa market and past Equity Bank Gikomba Branch, and most Kenyans access Gikomba on foot, so the shoes you decide to wear matter a lot. You want to wear comfortable shoes that you can walk in and navigate the paths. Put on closed flat shoes or sports shoes. This will come in handy when you are shopping for cheap clothes in Nairobi down town areas. The path is not a smooth one, and you may come across some wet surfaces. Your shoes need to provide the correct grip and also protect your feet.

Make up and accessories to put on to Gikomba Market

We get that you like looking good and that doing so may include the application of make up in Nairobi. However, if you are going to Gikomba, lose the makeup. This is a case where a lack of make up is an investment. Do not wear any accessories. This includes earrings, chains, watches…yes, I said watches. Remember, you will be shopping amongst a sea of people. You do not want your earrings being caught up in someone else’s hair. You can also be an attraction of the muggers in Nairobi with the expensive accessories. These thieves in Nairobi are common especially in Gikomba area in Nairobi.

Bags and paper bags to carry to Gikomba Market

You need a place to put the clothes you will purchase from Gikomba market. Ensure you have a large bag that is easily foldable and smaller bags preferably paper bags. These bags will come in handy as you move from clothes vendor to another clothes vendor in Gikomba market. Removing a paper bag to put in the clothes would reduce the number of times you need to open your bad. Once you finish with a clothes vendor, you can quickly put in the paper bag in your larger bag and take another paper bag for your next stop.

Shopping cash
