Orengo: ODM is finished; Linda Mwananchi is the new party vehicle

Orengo: ODM is finished; Linda Mwananchi is the new party vehicle

Key points

  • Orengo said ODM is finished and named himself Linda Mwananchi party leader charged with selling its policies.
  • Remarks came during Western Kenya mobilisation for Linda Mwananchi ahead of the 2027 vote.
  • Sifuna, Natembeya, Babu Owino and allies held rallies in Trans Nzoia and Bungoma, citing citizen donations.
  • Kenya Kwanza figures, including Musalia Mudavadi, are also campaigning for President Ruto in the same region.

Siaya Governor James Orengo put a funeral notice on the Orange Democratic Movement in public when he told Linda Mwananchi crowds that ODM is finished and that he now leads the new outfit that will carry their programme into the 2027 General Election, Eastleigh Voice reported from Western Kenya mobilisation stops.

In mixed Swahili and campaign plain-speak, Orengo cast himself as the person who must sell the movement's policies, arguing that the old party vehicle no longer matches how his camp intends to organise. The claim is political branding, not a Registrar of Political Parties gazette notice — but it signals how far senior ODM-linked figures are willing to go in public about a post-ODM lane.

Western tour and the "people's money" line

The same regional push featured Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna, Trans Nzoia Governor George Natembeya, Embakasi East MP Babu Owino and other opposition voices in Kitale, Kiminini, Kamukuywa, Kimilili, Chwele and Bungoma town. Sifuna pointed to convoy support and cash from residents — including Chwele — as proof the project can run on citizen money rather than a handful of wealthy patrons.

That funding story is also a governing pitch: if ordinary people bankroll the campaign, the argument goes, the eventual administration would owe them more than a closed donor circle. Whether donation photos survive audit-style scrutiny is a different question the movement has not yet answered in published books.

Same region, rival machines

Western Kenya is not empty ground. Kenya Kwanza leaders, among them Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi, have been rallying for President William Ruto on a parallel calendar. Orengo's ODM-is-dead line therefore lands inside a live contest for the same counties, not a vacuum.

Politics desk: Politics. Watch for whether Linda Mwananchi files party instruments that match the podium language — constitution, officials, membership rules — or whether "party" remains a movement slogan. A published 90-day checklist on registration steps would separate branding from institution-building before 2027 nomination calendars harden.

For now the verified posture is narrow: Orengo publicly demoted ODM, claimed Linda Mwananchi leadership, and joined a Western mobilisation that sells citizen funding as a political method. Everything beyond that — ballot symbols, nominee rules, money trails — still has to be built where voters can check it.
