Eastleigh Voice reports that Commonwealth and East African lawyers have rallied behind the Law Society of Kenya (LSK) in its push for judicial accountability, with the Commonwealth Lawyers Association expressing support while stressing the need to keep talking so legal practice and court administration do not collapse.
International bar solidarity raises the diplomatic cost of dismissing LSK concerns as mere industrial action. It also raises the bar for LSK itself: partners who defend accountability usually also defend continuous access to justice. That is the tension already visible when judges’ associations warn about more than 10,000 daily listings and litigants left waiting.
Accountability without paralysis
Healthy systems need both: mechanisms to scrutinise judicial conduct and a culture that keeps hearings open. Boycotts, walkouts and counter-statements can clarify power — or simply transfer pain to accused persons, families in succession disputes and SMEs stuck on commercial lists.
Regional lawyers’ involvement suggests the dispute is being read as a rule-of-law stress test for East Africa, not only a Nairobi guild quarrel.
Path out
Structured talks with published agendas, time-bound reform items, and independent facilitation would serve the public better than open-ended standoffs. Litigants deserve calendars that move.
