Since it became fully chartered, Great Lakes University of Kisumu has become a source of knowledge and instruction to many students living in the great Lake region. In fact, the university has since expanded to encompass four campuses and various teaching sites. Individuals can study at one of the sites, namely: Garissa, Kapsabet, Kisumu City, Kisii, Kokise, Mbita, Mfangano, Mumias, Nairobi, Oyugis, Siaya and Sondu. Great Lakes University of Kisumu offers various courses under the Faculty of Health Sciences. The Faculty of Health Science has different departments such as the Nursing Department and the Department of Clinical Medicine and Surgery. These departments offer courses such as:

Courses offered at the Nursing Department:

Bachelor of Science (B.Sc) in Nursing (direct entry)

Bachelor of Science in Nursing takes place over a period of 12 semesters. It is a full time course that costs Ksh 66,700 per semester. Individuals wanting to pursue the course should have obtained the minimum qualifications for undergraduate programmes. This is for students who are taking the course directly.

Bachelor of Science (B.Sc) in Nursing (upgrading)

The faculty of Health Science gives students the opportunity to upgrade their skills once they already have a diploma or similar qualification. Bachelor of Science in Nursing (upgrading) is a 9 semester course that coosts Ksh 66, 700 per semester.

Courses offered by the Department of Clinical Medicine and Surgery

Diploma in Clinical Medicine, Surgery and Community Health

Individuals wanting to pursue Diploma in Clinical Medicine, Surgery and Community Health should have obtained a minimum of KCSE mean grade C (plain). The course takes place over a period of 9 semesters and costs Ksh 50,000 per semester.

Admission requirements:

  • Individuals who want to pursue certificate courses under the faculty of health should have obtained at least a mean grade of C- (minus) in KCSE or an equivalent qualification.
  • Individuals who want to pursue diploma courses at Great Lakes University of Kisumu should have obtained a minimum of KCSE mean grade of C (plain) or an equivalent qualification.
  • Individuals who want to apply for undergraduate programmes should ensure they have obtained at least a KCSE mean grade of C+ or an equivalent qualification.
  • Individuals who want to pursue post graduate programmes should have a degree or a higher diploma from a recognized institution.
