Where to find Fashion stalls around Fig-Tree area in Ngara, Nairobi

Have you ever wondered where to get smart new dresses, shoes of all kinds, trench coats, smart sweaters and tops, men and women’s suits, smart trousers, boots, inner wear, dinner dresses, jeans, skirts, jackets, pencil trousers, African lesso and kitenge? Don’t wonder no more. Ngara stalls along Murang’a road a few minutes from the city is the place to go and get it all. These stalls are found all the way from Kahama Hotel area to way past JCC church and on the opposite side from Makini Building to around Fig-Tree area and past that.

These stalls avail all the products you need and due to competition from other stalls and from the peddlers who sell along the corridors, the prices of the items are relatively affordable. You can get all types of various items of fashion. This is a place which attracts the attention of workers from various sections of the city, including journalists and media group personalities. The stall owners are hardworking persons who win your attention even before you get to their stall. The people passing by get to be updated on what the stalls are offering and what they have for you that suits your body shape and complexion and at what price. This way, these stall owners manage to get buyers who had no intention or had not budgeted to spend in the first place, but were fascinated by the good prices and various kinds of items offered. Unlike the peddlers who are always running up and down from the police, these stalls have permits and therefore, you will shop without a hurry or worry of loss of goods. Need I say the obvious – you get to have a place to fit the clothes you want to purchase. You get a service that leaves you contented.

Don’t wonder all the places in Nairobi looking for what you can easily get in one place. The Ngara stalls are convenient distance wise and you can board any vehicle going past Ngara such as those heading to Eastleigh, Gachie, Ruaka, Banana, Gigiri, Thika road and among others as long as they are passing through Ngara area.

The other day, I was looking for fabulous, unique boots to wear to work. I managed to save some time to pass through Ngara area to do some shopping. I expected to just see the usual boots every Tom and Mary wear! To my shock and excitement, I got pretty special ankle-high black boots, with a little of fashion to make it an in trend item!! From then, I don’t think I will be shopping anywhere else any time soon!

How To Dress For The Cold Weather In Kenya

The cold and frigid weather in Kenya is here with us again. Kenya enjoys a rather warm tropical climate most months of the year. However the months of June, July and August get very cold for Kenyans. Kenya also experiences a cold season during the months of March and October, over the long and short rains respectively.

Everybody in Kenya is trying to keep warm during these cold periods. The frigid weather also demands that we wear appropriate shoes to keep our feet warm. Kenyans are lucky that temperatures do not fall as much as they do in other European countries experiencing winter seasons. As such, Kenyans are able to cope up with the sudden weather changes rather comfortably.

It is advisable that you wear high polyester garments next to your skin during the cold weather in Kenya. Polyester helps to keep your skin dry and warm. Unlike cotton that absorbs body moisture and leaves you with a clammy feeling, polyester which has a wider surface area carries the sweat away from your body and spreads it out leaving you feeling dry. You could then add a woollen blouse or shirt over your inner polyester garment depending on how low temperatures are. You should wear a water resistant jacket, preferably with a hood to keep off water from seeping into your inner garments.

Kenyans should avoid wearing sandals and all kinds of open shoes during the cold weather. Exposing your feet to cold temperatures could give your feet cold sores. You will also not able to maneuver through muddy areas when in open shoes. Being in closed shoes will ensure that your feet feel warm throughout the day. It will also ease your time in the bathroom as you do not have to scrape layers of mud off your feet.

Scarfs also come in handy during the cold season in Kenya. They help you keep your neck and chest area warm all through. For this kind of weather in Kenya, woollen scarfs are best suited. Gloves too can be worn if you don’t need to use your hands much. You could also add a beret hat or a woollen marvin hat to ensure that even your head stays warm.

Kenyans are advised to take hot drinks such as cocoa and tea. You will notice that with a cup of hot you will generate so much warmth that you possibly won’t need so much clothing to keep warm.  With these tips, you are well braced for the cold season.

How To Rock Your Trench Coat In Warm Weather In Kenya

Every lady in Nairobi has a trench coat. There is a song by Cake wanting a girl in a short skirt and a long jacket, that’s probably every girl in the city of Nairobi these days! If you spot a lady in town without a trench coat on, then it is safely tucked somewhere in their closets waiting for the temperatures to drop. Good news is you can actually work your trench coats even in the warm weather ladies! Here are a few tips: the trick lies in having the trench unbuttoned!

Trench and white denim

The white denim pants cool down the “heat” effect by having a trench coat on. White is known to reflect heat and as such keep you relatively cool as compared to black.

Trench and black mini

This is my personal favorite look. Wearing that little black dress and a trench coat of a different color- from bolds to ash gives a million dollar look. Try it some time, and couple it up with a nice pair of stilettos.

Trench and denim cut offs

This is a more daring look. Frayed cut offs or rather shorts work best as compared to neatly hemmed shorts. Again this is a looked designed for the slimmer silhouettes. Fuller ladies are advised to stay away from this look as the short length of the cut offs attract too much attention-negatively. Complete the look with a pair of knee or mid calf boots

Trench and all white

This look works as in the first case. Wearing a little white dress and a trench, (remember, unbuttoned trench) gives a classy and chic look. Add on a pair of heels preferably of a bold or dark color to give life to the white. Oh, and not to forget the clutch bag!

One other very important thing about trench coats: Flared trousers and trench coats are the ultimate fashion disaster!! If you are to rock a trench coat, do so with boot cut skinny jeans, tights or jeggings. Long dresses and skirts tend to bring in a “trench-dress competition” effect for length. If you settle on skirts and dresses make sure it is shorter than the trench. Trench coats work well with almost all types of shoes. From heels to flats, ankle to knee boots, name it. Even for those who cannot keep their balance on high heeled shoes, take a relax pill! Flats are perfectly fine!!! Trench coats are cool and classic and lend a polished vibe to your look. They can be worn on week days and weekends, on laid off days and on first dates. It transcends through seasons, years and trends. One of the best things about the trench coat is that you can really personalize how you wear it-left casually open, buttoned all the way, knotted, or belted-plus there are a slew of chic styles to choose from too. The trench coat is a must have timeless, trendy and versatile piece of garment even for the men too!

Where Kenya stands in the fashion industry

Where Kenya stands in the fashion industry

by Lucy Wanjiku Mwangi

7d2dd38e3bKenya has shown progress through having creative fashion designers with glamorous pieces from our traditions and in the latest designs. These designers participate and showcase their pieces during functions such as fashion weeks. A fashion week is a fashion industry event, lasting approximately one week, which allows fashion designers to display their latest collections in runway shows and buyers and the media to take a look at the latest trends. This is a good way of marketing the designs that are for that particular season. Most importantly, these events let the industry know what’s “in” and what’s “out” for the season.

In Kenya, this is the 4th season of a fashion week; however, Fashion week happens twice a year in the major fashion capitals of the world: Paris, Milan, New York and London. Fashion weeks are held several months in advance of the season to allow the press and buyers a chance to preview fashion designs for the following season. This is also to allow time for retailers to arrange to purchase or incorporate the designers into their retail marketing. The latest innovations in dress designs are showcased by renowned fashion designers during these fashion weeks, and all these latest collections are covered in magazines and in newspapers.

Trendz Kenya Fashion Festival, Sub Saharan Africa’s most beloved Fashion Event, Brain Child of Sonu Sharma has evolved to become Kenya Fashion Week now into its 4th season. The event has become a focus for a broader base of fashion linked activities with mainstream regional and international designers, high profile labels, sponsors and media choosing to align with this event. This has opened doors for the growth of Kenyan fashion to keep up with the ever revolving world. Kenya Fashion Week sponsor is Brand Vaseline which is co-sponsored by Samsung Electronics and Jameson Select.

Well, the Kenya fashion week has the aim of exposing Kenya as an established fashion and urban lifestyle capital of Africa. This makes Kenya a target of many buyers and promoters of the designers. The fashion week also attract competition which leads to growth of fashion in Kenya. Other objectives of this fashion week include building relationships, creating opportunities and encouraging excellence in quality. When there is a place to show your designs and get to attract retailers, buyers and the media, then the designers are motivated to work hard and come up with new pieces for different seasons.

The last Kenya fashion week was held on 24 Aug 2013 at Villa Rosa Kempinski in Nairobi. It consisted of various fine designers from Africa and around the world showcasing exquisite collections, world class entertainment, exhibits of lifestyle and luxury products and services, VIP Red Carpet Dinner and reception and the after party. The efforts of these fashion promoters should be recognized as they strive to contribute to the world of Fashion with the endearing support of the Fashion Fraternity and organizing this event.

Such a fashion week event includes exhibits, runway shows and the party part for exchange of ideas and where the designers get contacts and contracts from potential buyers in attendance. This is a way of contributing to togetherness of our country and a way of promoting growth ofour economy. This allows Kenyans to become aware of the designs that can be created within and from outside our country and for them to choose from a variety. So the next time a fashion week is held in Kenya, ensure you attend, you might get that particular design that will set you apart in the crowd!

The fashion week hosted designers from all over the world. These included Suzaan Heyns from South Africa, Ruald Rheeder from South Africa, Dev R Nil from India, Estella Ogbonna of Estella Couture from USA, Hakeem Balogun with Kimono Kollection from Nigeria, Kushweet Bharij who is based in Kenya, Chauvin Buthaud – Laurence & Christina Schatzeden – Laurenceairline from Ivory Coast, Yvonne Mwosu of Vonne Couture in Nigeria, Nadir Tati from Angola, Shahida Zia – Zenia Coutoure from Pakistan, Tina Ndidi Ugo- Didi Creations in Nigeria, Dave who is based here in Kenya and finally Yvonne Odhiambo & Gloria Baraza of Afrostreet Kollection which is in Kenya. This shows that the fashion week had attracted designers from all over the world and was a success. These designers had various pieces which were presented for the next season. In fact, the photo shows Afrostreet Kollections’s some of the runway pieces.

However, kenya’s position on the fashion industry should not be only limited to the Kenya fashion week, there are other Kenyans who are participating in fashion industry even while abroad. Kenya’s own Eva Rogo-Levenez is based in Paris and owns her own fashion house called Ler Ligisa. It features her original designs using exclusively Kenyan textiles. It should be noted that Eva was recently invited to show her Kenya-inspired fashion at the New York Fashion Week.  Inheriting her love of fashion from both her mother and maternal grandfather who was once considered the finest tailor in Western Kenya, Eva took up designing in Kenyan fabrics with the intent to promote her country, even as she lives in Paris – the fashion capital of Europe. Such designers make Kenya’s fashion well known all over and hence making our country to be inviting to more people with intention to promote our designs.

Eva’s move to Paris has allowed her to show off Kenyan fabrics even as she’s proved that West Africans are not the only people in the continent who can create haute couture. This makes an entry point for Kenya in fashion and to create awareness of our fabrics and designs. Eva says that when she organized a fashion party in 2012 in Paris, her guests said that they did not know Kenya had beautiful fabrics. Noting that the Kenya kikoy, Maasai shuka and even the khanga are very different from the wax material frequently used in making West African fashion, Eva said her audiences were thrilled to discover that East Africa has such original and elegant couture. American friends who had seen her Ler Ligisa designs invited Eva to attend this year’s New York Fashion which was held at the National Opera Center of America on 7th Avenue in New York City recently. She showed her 15 designs of Kenyan fabric.

Through such designers who choose to market their country while living abroad, Kenya will eventually gain more fame and popularity in fashion industry. This will make our nation to be the target of many to get original fabrics and designs which are traditional and from our own culture. We indeed have beautiful cultural fabric and designs; all we need is a little more exposure to the world.

Tips on where to get fancy fashionable clothes at low prices in Nairob

by

If you want to get fancy clothes at low prices, Wait for Nairobi peddlers in the evening! Yes! I said wait for Nairobi peddlers in the evening. These hawkers of new trends in the city are usually all over the town in the evening. Clothes usually go for as low as Shs 100, whether trousers, skirts, sweater tops, smart tops, jumpers, tights, jeans, jackets, dresses, shorts among other many kinds of clothes. Those peddlers mostly take advantage of rush hour, when people are a lot in town while heading home from their places of work. The sellers of the commodities shout around about what they are selling and at how much it is going for to attract buyers. Passersby are usually attracted by sale of unique items or cheap prices. The clothes and other items sold by these people are usually in most cases second hand but unique items. The peddlers sell the items to everyone equally.

Among clothes, the hawkers also sell shoes, boots, accessories and jewellery, kitchen items, towels, novels and other books, nail polish, phone covers, and many other things. If there is a person who has a sweet tongue, it’s a hawker in Nairobi. You can just buy anything, including items you don’t even need. They know their business, and it is indeed an art! It has become like a way of life, and the law enforcers have taken a reluctant role in chasing the peddlers away hence allowing the sale to continue. Probably because they benefit from it too!

It’s a huge advantageous craze to buy from the peddlers! Your shopping distance is reduced, you get various places to choose from, you get the items at a low price, and you could also negotiate the price! Kenya is a place of plenty. It shows right from the streets. The peddlers are usually found all the way from Ngara to town and then to downtown towards Muthurwa area. Make your way one of these evening and you can get all you need just from the streets!
