How To Get An University Scholarship In Kenya

There are many students in Kenya who do exceptionally well in their secondary school examinations but lack the financial power to carry on with University education in Kenya, even for the rather affordable public universities. There are other Kenyans who have concluded their undergraduate studies in Kenya and wish to get sponsorship and funding for their masters or even doctorate studies within the country or abroad. There are very many channels to acquire a scholarship here in Kenya. Most of the public universities in Kenya give scholarships to their students who acquire first class honors in their undergraduate studies.

It is possible to get sponsorship from individuals or certain companies in Kenya who offer funding to the best performing students. The Equity Bank of Kenya also funds exemplary students for undergraduate studies in top notch universities such as Yale, Cambridge and Oxford. The Equity Bank offers scholarships in Kenya to the first male and female students in every district where it operates. So far, this program has benefited well over 1000 people in Kenya. Equity bank has also helped at least 69 students gain entry into the world leading universities as of last year.

Some employers also give study scholarships to their highly esteemed workers in Kenya. They could for instance fund your master’s degree on condition that once you have completed your studies, you will return to the same organization to impart your acquired knowledge. For example, most well-grounded NGO’s, parastatals and other government agencies in Kenya give such scholarships.

There are many other international scholarships that are offered to students in third world, or rather developing countries such as Kenya. These scholarships are being advertised all over in the internet. They give priorities to Africans, and more so African ladies as they are out to achieve gender equality in terms of education. Most of these scholarships can be accessed through www.scholarships.com.     With an internet connection, time and dedication it is very easy to identify a viable study with a specific line of study.

Most people in Kenya applying for scholarships keenly eye Universities located in the U.S.A thereby missing out on other opportunities. For example, there are so many scholarships offered in the Netherlands, Belgium and Germany, but Kenyans are adamant to apply. This is mainly because these countries are not native English speakers and as such Kenyans fear being alienated or feeling sidelined and out of place. Some programs however are taught in English and therefore most of these universities ask non-native English speakers to undertake an English course – so relax!

Once you have applied for admission and gained entry, the next step is looking for a granter. For Netherlands based programs, the Netherlands Fellowship Program sponsors students from all over, including Kenya. There could be other sponsors such as Sir Johns and Lady Higgins Scholarship. Most of these scholarships include air travel to and fro the intended country of study, subsistence as well as health and tuition covers.

Get looking people, and best of luck!

the difference between campus life in nairobi and upcountry 1

The Difference Between Campus Life In Nairobi And Upcountry

Every time I pass by the suitcase vendors in Nairobi town, I am reminded of that time when I was shopping for a suitcase for my freshman year in college in Kenya. I was admitted to one of the public universities in Kenya. My first choice had of course been The University of Nairobi or at the very worst Kenyatta University in Kenya. Having been born and brought up in the country side, I wanted to have a personal feel of the city life, and what better opportunity than over the four years of campus stay?

I remember checking my admission over the mobile phones, and shock on me, I had been admitted to Moi University in Eldoret Kenya. Well, I was to get more shocked when the admission letter and other relevant documents were sent to me. The main campus was located 36 Kms from Eldoret town! Now, I was not only far away from Nairobi, but also far away from the nearest town to the campus. If my parents had the financial capability, I would have enrolled for a privately sponsored program in one of those universities in the city of Kenya, but as this was not the case- I packed my bags and left for an unknown land. The land of Eldoret!

I am sure most Kenyans my age would have opted to study in Nairobi too. Nairobi is more accessible from other areas all over the country. Eldoret was at least over six hrs drive. On the travel day, I had to make sure that I left early enough to be in Eldoret before dusk. Nairobi on the other hand, is located 2hrs away from my countryside home.

People who study in Nairobi are subjected to better living conditions and open to more opportunities career wise as compared to those studying away from Nairobi. Here in Nairobi you could get a side hustle for students say a cyber-attendant job and this can help supplement your finances over the semester. In Moi University however, where the nearest town is located at least 36 Kms away, you have to depend on the little pocket money from your parents, or the HELB money for the lucky few.

Last week I had to travel all the way from Nairobi to Eldoret to sort out an academic issue. The time wasted on travel and the money used on accommodation would have been saved had such a situation arisen to an alumnus of one of these city campuses living in Nairobi.

On the other hand however, there are more social evils experienced in a town campus in Kenya. Most students in Kenya who are in their late teens or early twenties will tend to try out everything they can. From liquor taking to bhang smoking. Some even turn to other hard drugs found in the city of Nairobi. The ladies who need to supplement their finances also result to prostitution thus the infamous Koinange Street. I don’t mean to say that these social evils are not found in those upcountry universities. My emphasis is on prevalence. Other campuses are sadly gaining in on these wayward behaviors among students in Kenya. Just recently, there was a report on the influx of prostitutes in Eldoret town over a wheat harvesting period in the area. The anchors were specific to say that most of these hookers were students in the area colleges and universities.

Be the judge!

Overhauling 8-4-4 may just be the solution to attaining Vision 2030

Overhauling 8-4-4 may just be the solution to attaining Vision 2030

by Juanita Igandu

A few months ago I had the opportunity of teaching IGCSE, 8-4-4, and ACE curriculums co-currently. It was quite an experience I must say because in as much as I had exposure to IGCSE and 8-4-4 curriculums, I had never known about ACE. ACE stands Accelerated Christian Education. It is an American curriculum that fully encompasses Christianity throughout the course content. The Kenyan Government does not recognise it for reasons which seem fit however it does have a few strong points. There are quite a few things I got to see in these children as they went through these curriculums. ACE curriculum in as much as it is an over load of Christianity considering that CRE is part of the Kenyan curriculum, one thing that stood out is that it taught learners to think for themselves and to believe in themselves.

The 8-4-4 curriculum however makes learners so fearful no wonder many adults go through life not believing that they could start their own ventures and they succeed. Our classrooms are full of teachers who rule the students with an iron fist, punishing them for every small mistake but never giving them the opportunity to say what they know, share their experiences and knowledge and giving them the confidence to do so. The IGCSE curriculum has its own fair share of weaknesses especially in literature because for one it does not expose learners to African or Asian books yet there are so many great African writers. However the way the curriculum is structured it is so relevant to the western world, learners leave the school set up knowing what they want from life and how to proceed to the next level. The greatest strength 8-4-4 has is that the learners are very disciplined and exposed to different cultures from various subjects taught in schools.

If the curriculum developers could find a way of making a curriculum that is relevant to the Kenyan context, practical rather than theoretical in nature there may not be so many un-employed youth in the country. If all the good point of ACE, 8-4-4 and IGCSE systems could be siphoned out and incorporated into one system, Vision 2030 may not be such a dream. If they could find a way of training teachers to acquire a friendlier and open classroom environment it would encourage learners to believe in themselves. More innovations would be made from learners. By now KenGen the only power generating company in Kenya would be facing stiff competition from other players such as innovators who find a way of collecting garbage and using the heat to generate power. The education system needs to be overhauled to ensure that no matter what grade a learner leaves school with he/ she is still useful and can become independent unlike today where college graduates are unable to fend for themselves.

Education is the key to many things in life and if economic gurus ignore these few weaknesses Vision 2030 may just be a mirage in the desert that disappears the nearer you get. If all stake holders could openly acknowledge the great weaknesses in our education system, a total overhaul of the structures in place would be an option rather than making changes here and there. Is it not better to have a new pair of trousers for Christmas rather than an old one full of patch work here and there? I would always prefer a new one.

The Unemployed Kenyan graduate

The Unemployed Kenyan graduate

by Brenda Mareri

Years spent getting your communal degree are finally over and you’re stepping into the dreaded world of the job hunt. It’s almost routine for all graduates to wake up early, shower, dress up and sit at your computer. Open job websites and scan for suitable positions. Apply to all trainee positions but no reply. Depression sets in, you move on to printing multiple copies of your CV and posting them to all potential employees.

Broke, no job prospects and depressed am sure this is something most graduates go through. Pressure from the family members to step it up and get some income gets you to your wits end. What are you doing wrong? When is your big break? Well then you need to change how you operate. Running the same routine and expecting the same results is just futile. Using the same CV to apply to all job positions is not advisable.

Get your CV revamped using tips from websites such as lifehacker.com. Your cover letter should not be pages long, no employer wants to read your whole life history, let your CV do that for you. Even after all this most Kenyan graduates still can’t catch a lucky break, next best thing to do is engross yourself in volunteer work,  keep busy and active to give your life meaning or go back to your studies.

Don’t stop improving your CV and always have a positive outlook on life. A mantra that I personally live by is that ‘When life gives you lemons make lemonade’.

Best thing to do is to learn a new skill, never programmed before? Get on the internet learn some java script and C++. Always wanted to know how to make abstract art, get on the internet and learn how. Learn how to make some origami and sell them to your neighbors. Keeping busy will keep you sane and active. You will have an open mind to try new skills which might eventually land you your new job.

1.Pituitary gland(hypophysis).

It is marble size at the base of the brain. It is controlled by the hypothalamus or other neurone mechanisms. It consist from the anterior pituitary gland to posterior pituitary gland.

a)Posterior pituitary gland.

It produces antidiuretic hormone and oxytocin.Antidiuretic hormone is responsible for fluid retention while oxytocin helps contraction of uterine wall and milk ejection.

b)Anterior pituitary gland.

It is responsible for most of the hormone from the pituitary gland which includes: the growth hormone, follicle stimulating hormone , lutenizing hormone, prolactin hormone, and ardenocorticotropin hormone.

2.Thyroid gland.

It is the largest endocrine gland in the neck midline. It secretes two non-steroidal hormones, that is triiodothyronine and thyroxine. These hormones regulate metabolism:

a)It increase protein synthesis.

b)Promote glycolysis ,gluconeugenesis and glucose uptake.

c)They increase the pigment responsible for skin colour.

d)They also give calcitonin which regulate calcium metabolism.

3.Parathyroid glands.

It is found behind the thyroid gland. It consist of four tiny glands. It secretes parathyroid hormones. It regulates the calcium metabolism alongside other hormones such as cytokinin and hyroxicholecalciferol(vitamin C).Parathyroid hormone regulate the phosphate level.

4.Adrenal medulla.

It is situated directly at the top of each kidney and is stimulated by the sympathetic nerves system. It secretes catecholamine(epinephrine/neropinephrine).Epinephrine is responsible for fight and flight response.Epinephrine increases the heart rate and blood pressure. It also increases the respiratory rate, metabolic rate, vasodilation, and glycolysis.Norepinephrine main activity is to bring back the body rest.

5.Adrenal cortex.

It secretes over 30 different steroid hormone know corticosteroids.they are grouped into three classes:

a)Minerocorticoid .

They control the absorption of sodium and secretion of potassium in the kidney tubule. They are important in regulation electrolyte balance. The main hormone in this category is called aldosterone.

They include testosteroid, estrogen, and progesterone. They are secreted in small amounts with slight effect on the body.

6.Pancrease gland.

It is located slightly behind the stomach. The major hormone it produces is insulin and glucagon from the islet of langherns.

i)Insulin.

It reduces the blood glucose, facilitates the glucose transport  into the cell,it promotes glycogenesis, inhibits glycogenesis, promotes the uptake of amino acids into the cell and improves the manufacture of proteins.

ii)Glucagon.

It increases the blood glucose and removes the gonads or sex glands.

7.Gonads(sex glands).

In the male it is the testes and they produces testerone which are responsible for secondary characteristics in the male. They play a role in muscle development, bone development, maturation as well as spermatogenesis.

The ovaries in female produce estrogen which are responsible for secondary characteristic in female.
