Medicine course is among the marketable courses in Kenya. It is the most expensive course to pursue in Kenya and the government of Kenya spends millions of money to train students in this field. Many students who finish their Kenya certificate of secondary education (KCSE) apply for the medicine course in Kenya put only few are usually considered because of the highly required cut points.

There are approximately eleven institutions (both public and private universities) that offer Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery in Kenya and only few offer Bachelor of Dental Surgery. These institutions are normally audited for the necessary equipments required to train medical students before they are accredited and approved to train the students. The board in Kenya that accredits and approves the institutions that offer medical courses (medicine and dental) is the Kenya Medical Practitioners and Dentist Board (KMPDB).

The KMPDB in Kenya is the board that is responsible for the training of the medical students while training and also award of license of practice to those medical students who qualify after training. Therefore, the institutions that offer Bachelor of medicine and bachelor of surgery in Kenya include:

• University of Nairobi – this is a public university that is located in Nairobi city

• Moi University – this is a public university and is located in Eldoret town.

• Kenyatta University – it is a public university and is located 20 kilometers away from the Nairobi city central business district (CBD).

• Uzima University – it is a private university in Kenya.

• Egerton University – it is a public university and is situated in Egerton town, 18 kilometers from Nakuru town.

• Kenya Methodist University – this is a private university located in Meru town.

• Maseno University – it is a government university located in Maseno town.

• Jomo Kenyatta university of Agriculture and Technology – this is a public university located in Nairobi town.

• Mount Kenya University – it is a private university located in Thika town.

The faculty of veterinary sciences in the university is an old faculty that was formed 1940s when university of Nairobi was still a college and by that time, a diploma course in Animal disease was the only course offered. The faculty of veterinary sciences has grown drastically over years and now they have five departments which include:

The admission criteria of diploma programmes differ from degree programmes in that the diploma courses require a minimum KCSE grade of C (plain) while the minimum requirement for one to pursue degree programmes in the faculty of veterinary science, he/she should have a minigrade of C (plus) at the KCSE in Kenya. The minimum admission requirements for diploma programmes (above mentioned diploma programmes) offered at the University of Nairobi under the faculty of veterinary science include:

• KCSE (mean grade of C) or equivalent in addition a grade of at least C (plain) in option A (Biology, Chemistry and Mathematics/Physics/Geography) or option B (Biological sciences, physical sciences and Mathematics/Geography).
• KCE division II with at least a credit in Chemistry, Biology and any other one science subject or Physical Science and Biology.
• Advance level certificate (EAACE or KACE) with one principal pass and at least a subsidiary pass in Chemistry and Biology.
• KCSE (mean C-) or KCE division III with certificate in Animal Health or Agriculture from a recognized institution.
• A Diploma in Biological sciences from a recognized institution.

The minimum admission requirement for degree programmes in the faculty of veterinary sciences at the University of Nairobi includes:

• KCSE (mean grade of C+) with at least C (plain) in Biology or Biological sciences and any of the following subjects; Mathematics, Chemistry, Physics or Geography for those who want to pursue bachelor of veterinary medicine, wildlife management and fisheries and aquaculture management. Those who want to pursue leather science and Technology; they should have KCSE (mean grade of C+) with at least C in Chemistry, and either one of the following; Biology, or Biological sciences, or Physics or Physical sciences or agriculture.
• KCSE mean grade of C (minus) or KCE divisional II with diploma in relevant field from a recognized institution.
• Advance level certificate (EAACE or KACE) with two principal passes and at least one subsidiary pass which must be in Biology and the other in any science subject.
• A degree in Bachelor of Science in a biological science from a recognized institution.

Since it is a public university, it admits students from all over the country and has a population of approximately 20,000 who majorly reside in this town.

ii)                   Mount Kenya University (MKU) – this university is also available in Kakamega but it only has its branch in this town. It is located in Mega Mall located in Kakamega Municipality opposite to the famous Muliro Garden. This university students are most available within Kakamega town as they have to find hostels within the town as their institution being a branch do not have their own hostels. However, recently, the universities is in the process of construction of their own complex in Kakamega Town for their students.

iii)                 University of Nairobi, Kakamega Branch – University of Nairobi being the largest university in Kenya has ensured that Kenyans can access university education from their locations or nearby. From this therefore, it has developed its branches in various towns and among them is Kakamega. It has an Extra Mural Centre in Kakamega which admits students from within the area for studying different programmes they offer. Since it is a world class university, its Centre in Kakamega also has a largest population despite it being a study Centre as people view University of Nairobi as the best and prestigious university which offer good courses and have the best teaching staff.

iv)                 Kenyatta University – this is another university in Kenya which is very developed and offer variety of courses which either can or cannot be found In other Kenyan universities. From the development point of view, Kenyatta university therefore have a Centre of Regional Development in Kakamega Town in which it offer courses related to the development of regions and trade. This is a Study Centre and therefore their population is not much as compared to other universities and branches around Kakamega. This study Centre is located in the Holden Mall along the Kakamega- Webuye Road few Metres away from Kakamega Main Bus Station.

v)                  Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT) – JKUAT is also available in Kakamega as one of the best universities in the region. This university’s branch was established earlier before the other university branches available in this region and therefore it has a reasonable population in connection to its period of operation in Kakamega. This branch in Kakamega is located in Ambwere Complex and offer most courses offered by JKUAT Main Campus. This therefore makes the Kakamega residents being able to access these courses without being forced to look for a vacancy in the Main Campus which could turn out to be difficult.

Kakamega therefore is experiencing vast development as a result of these universities. Within a short period of time, Kakamega would be one of the developed towns in Kenya. The other factor which majorly contribute for the students preferring this town for their studying is that, it have a cool and quite environment suitable for studying.

JKUAT is one of the most developed universities in Kenya which has been able to see off a lot of graduates who have been able to create successful careers and life. This university has been ranked among the best in the country offering the best and high standard courses some of which are uniquely found in this institution. In order to meet their educational aims and objectives, JKUAT have been able to develop by opening up branches and study centres all over the country in major towns in Kenya.

The courses offered under this title are a Master of Science in Chemistry in the option of Analytical, Organic and Natural Products which require a holder of at least Second Class Honours (upper division) having studied Chemistry either as a single subject at Bachelor Degree Level or its equivalent from a recognized university and should have proof of postgraduate research ability, M.sc in Bio information and Molecular Biology which require a Bachelor’s degree with at least a Second Class Honours (Upper division) in the following fields: Biochemistry or Molecule Microbiology, Biological and Agricultural Sciences, Computer Science, Mathematics and/or Statistics, Engineering and Health Sciences with sufficient background of Biochemistry in Undergraduate and Computer Sciences,

M.sc in Applied Statistics requiring the student to have a Bachelor in Statistics with at least a second Class Honours (upper division) or a Bachelors in Mathematics and majored in Statistics as well as M.sc in Pure Mathematics whose qualifications are a holder of a Bachelor degree with at least Second Class Honours (Upper Division) having studied Mathematics as a single subject or as a major of the two subjects, with a substantial number of units of Pure Mathematics studied in JKUAT or a recognized university by senate. In addition to meeting of the requirements, students who are admitted in this programme should be proficient in at least one of the high level programming language.

Undergraduate Courses

This campus department of Basic and Applied Science also offer the Bachelor courses and they include a Bachelor of Science in Actuarial Science (BAS) where the student to be admitted in this course should have a Mean Grade of C+ (Plus) with at least a C+ (Plus) in both Mathematics and English or a holder of KACE or the A-level equivalent should have at least two principal passes including Mathematics. Diploma applicants should be holders of Diploma in Applied Science with at least a CREDIT PASS in relevant subjects from an institution recognized by the university senate as well as Bachelor of Science in Mathematics and Computer Science which require a KCSE mean aggregate of at least C+ (Plus), a C+(Plus) in Mathematics and in additional, the student should have at least a C in both subjects from the alternative of Chemistry or Physics and Physical and Biological Science or should have a minimum of 2 principal passes in Science subject in General Certificate of Education (GCE),Advanced levels/Kenya Advanced Certificate of Education (KACE).
