Kenya National Examination Council has enabled many Kenyans to have a second chance in obtaining their O level certificate. The KNEC examination body in Kenya provide a private candidate registration avenue in Kenya for those who missed their chance in KCSE for various reasons. Some of people who register as private candidates for KCSE in Kenya include: those who failed their KCSE exam in Kenya, and wish to try again without having to attend classes and wear uniforms, or those who are older and had missed a chance in their youth in Kenya, or those due to unforeseen circumstances, especially due to sickness or accidents in Kenya, were unable to sit their KCSE examinations in Kenya.

Requirements Needed by KNEC for KCSE Private Candidate Registration in Kenya

The Kenya National Examination Council (KNEC) has put into place guidelines to make sure that only those qualified can sit for the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education examination in Kenya which ensures the KCSE results in Kenya will not be substandard. The KNEC requirements during registration for KCSE examinations in Kenya include; having a KCPE certificate in Kenya, birth certificate, two passport photos, time elapsed should be more than three years since they sat for their KCPE in Kenya and for a repeater it should be less than two years since their last KNEC sitting and a prospective candidate should produce a school leaving certificate in Kenya of the last school attended within Kenya. A confirmation of the candidate from the Head of the school where the KCSE candidate in Kenya will sit for the KCSE practical examination paper in Kenya should be produced by the candidate, and they should have sat and passed a qualifying test administered by KNEC in Kenya. A KCSE private candidate in Kenya would be expected to register for a minimum of 7 papers and a maximum of 9 papers in Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education examinations in Kenya. To register for KCSE privately in Kenya attract charges ranging from Ksh. 3,200 for the seven papers and Ksh 3,600 for the nine papers in KCSE exams in Kenya.

Also, made available by Kenya National Examination Council in collaboration with universities in Kenya like University of Nairobi, Moi University, Kenyatta University, Maseno University, Egerton University, Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology and Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology together with selected colleges in Kenya has provided an avenue where KCSE candidates in Kenya can improve their grades in particular KCSE subjects even after completion of the O level certificate, raising their score to the minimum average entry requirements for admission to university level in Kenya. The KCSE candidate wishing to boost KCSE subject scores in Kenya will be allowed to sit for a minimum of one paper for a bridging registration charge in Kenya of Ksh 2,000 for one paper while an extra KCSE subject will attract a fee of Ksh 200 per paper with another Ksh 100 bridging registration charge for a KCSE practical paper.
