Mathege Technical Training institute started as a harambee institution. It began as a result of initiatives of prominent leaders in Nyeri; including the former president of Kenya Hon. Mwai Kibaki; who was by then the MP of Othaya constituency. The institute was opened in 1984.

Mathenge technical training institute is located between Othaya and Nyeri towns; 11 kilometers from Othaya and about 17 kilometers from Nyeri town along Kagere Munyage road.

Currently the institute is owned by the government of Kenya and falls under the ministry of higher Education science and technology. It is run by the board of governers which manages the operations of the institute. The institute is mandated to produce competent graduates that are capable of applying the acquired scientific and technological skills in innovative building of Kenya economy. It aims at being a centre of excellence in both innovations and scientific technological training in the region.

Mathege technical training institute offers both certificate and diploma in its varius department which include:

  • Department Information and communication technology

  • Department Clothing technology

  • Department of business studies

  • Department of Food and Beverages

  • Department Building and Civil Engineering

  • Department of Automotive Engineering

The institute has also other sections that are non-academic such as industrial attachment, Sports and accounts, Guidance and Counseling.
