AMREF has its head offices in Nairobi which serve East Africa Countries. The organization offers both international and local internships in various fields. Interns are encouraged to work as by doing this they will be acquiring extra skills as well as giving back to the society. Interns at AMREF are exposed to various aspects of the organization’s programmes making them emerge as intellectuals and ready for the competitive job market. It is important to that all internship opportunities are awarded based on the objectives of AMREF. To be an intern at AMREF one has to apply and chosen by AMREF.

Individuals who are legible for the AMREF internship are students undertaking courses at diploma, degree, post-graduate or doctoral levels. The i8nternship is tailored to benefit both the student and the organization. The Internship is usually offered for a period of three months thought it can be extended to a maximum of half a year with the interns working for forty hours per week.

Internship placement at AMREF takes place twice a year, in March and September strictly for individuals applying from Africa. Applicants from outside Africa are placed in July and October every year. All applications are usually processed at least three months prior to starting of the internship.

Internship qualification Requirements

To qualify for this internship one must:

  • Specify why choose AMREF for internship and the benefits that will be acquired after completion of the internship.

  • Submit an internship application to the relevant human resource office via the address provided

  • Indicate programme of training approved by the institution

  • Indicate the field of academic specialization or field where training is required.

  • Attach supporting letters from the institution

Admission Requirement For Bachelor of Science in Optometry and Vision Sciences at Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology (MMUST) in Kenya.

 Eye is a very important part of the body and very sensitive because without eye we cannot be able to see what is happening in the surrounding. The lack of eyes can limit somebody movement. Although there was a course that deals with the management of eye conditions in Kenya, it is only offered at diploma level and is called diploma in optometry.

With advancement of education, a degree course that deals with eye conditions was introduced in Kenya in 2009 by Masinde Muliro University and the first intake was done in 2010 (2010-2011 academic year) with only seven students but since then, there have been several intakes that registered many students.

Kenya is among the five countries in Africa that offer Bachelor of Science in Optometry and vision science course. In Kenya, this course takes a minimum of four years with trimesters (three semesters per academic year) including attachments. The university is currently constructing its own eye hospital because but the students have been practicing at kakamega county hospital (former kakamega general provincial hospital).

Since Masinde Muliro university is the only university in Kenya that offers bachelor of science in optometry in Kenya, this course has become a very competitive courses due to availability of jobs hence the university is experiencing a lot of application from candidates.

Entry requirement for Bachelor of Science in Optometry and Vision Science (self sponsored students)

  • The candidates must obtained a mean grade of C+ (plus) at Kenya certificate of secondary education (KCSE) and passes in the following cluster subjects:

Alternative A – biology (C+), mathematics (C+), physics (C+) and English (C+).

Alternative B – biological science (B), physical sciences (C+), mathematics (C+) and English (C+)

  • Two principle passes in biology and physical and a credit either in chemistry or mathematics at KCSE.
  • Diploma in optometry or its equivalent from a recognized institution by MMUST senate.

The total fees paid for this degree program is Kshs.144, 000. First trimester is Kshs.68, 000, second trimester is Kshs.68, 000 and third trimester is Kshs.10, 000.
