New medical programmes offered at the University of Nairobi.
Medical courses are among well-paying jobs in Kenya and many young people aspire to do these courses since their childhood but end up not doing it because of the tough requirement and tution fees that is involved. Government of Kenya in fact spends millions of money training medical students in many universities and colleges. The University of Nairobi is the best medical university in Kenya and trains the students at all levels of education.
The medical courses offered by the university of Nairobi majorly in medicine, nursing, pharmacy, dental sciences and public health from undergraduate to doctor of philosophy level. All these courses are offered in the college of health sciences located in Chiromo campus of the University of Nairobi. The clinical departments are situated at Kenyatta National Hospital while the pre-clinical departments are located at the college of health sciences (Chiromo campus) of the University of Nairobi. The college of health sciences in the University of Nairobi has several schools and they are; school of medicine, school of nursing, school of public health, school of pharmacy and institute of tropical and infectious disease (UNITID).
The new medical courses offered at the University of Nairobi are mainly postgraduate programmes offered at respective schools under the college of health sciences. The only new undergraduate course offered is Bachelor of Science in medical laboratory science and technology.
The new courses offered at the school of medicine include Master of medicine (M.Med) in:
- Anaesthesiology.
- Plastic, Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgery.
- Paediatric Surgery.
- Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery.
There is also doctor of philosophy programmes offered in the same school (medicine) and they include;
- Ph.D in Anaesthelogy.
- Ph.D in Plastic, Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgery.
- Ph.D in Paediatric Surgery.
- Ph.D in Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery.
In the school of pharmacy, the new postgraduate (masters) programmes includes;
- M. Pharm. in Pharmacoepidemiology and Pharmacovigilance.
- M. Pharm. In industrial Pharmacy.
There is also doctor of philosophy programmes in the same school and they include Doctor of Philosophy degree in;
- Basic pharmacology.
- Applied Pharmacology.
- Clinical Pharmacology.
- Pharmaceutical Analysis.
- Pharmacognosy and Complementary Medicine.
- Pharmaceutical Chemistry.
- Pharmaceutics.
- Molecular Pharmacology.
- Industrial Pharmacy.
- Pharmacoepidemiolgy and Pharmacovigilance.
There is another postgraduate diploma course offered in the school of pharmacy in the University of Nairobi and is the postgraduate diploma in Pharmaceuticals Analysis.
The postgraduate programmes offered in the school of public health in the university of include;
- Master of Science in Health System Management.
- Master of Science in Public Health.
- Ph.D in Public Health.
- PGD (postgraduate diploma programmes) in Substance Abuse and Psychiatry Social Work.
There are only two postgraduate programmes offered at the institute of tropical and infectious diseases and they include;
- M.Sc. Medical Statistics; Tropical and Infectious Disease.
- PGD Biomedical Research Methodology; Tropical Disease.
