Nursing is a career that deals with management of patient both at the hospital and community level. This is a profession that is trained at certificate, diploma, degree, masters and Ph.D level. University of Nairobi is one of the institutions that this course from degree to Ph.D level.
The programme of nursing in Kenya at undergraduate level is all about general nursing. This has led to recent need for specialisation to improve on the health needs of the patients hence improving quality of life. The University of Nairobi through the school of nursing has given degree graduates nurse’sopportunity to pursue Master of Science in nursing so as to specialise in different clinical areas of nursing. They accept students from Kenya and also outside Kenya.
Once you graduate from master in nursing, you can do work in both public and private sectors as consultants in various fields such as research, care provision to the patients, training, supervision and program management. Master of Science in nursing offered at the University of Nairobi has many areas of specialization they include:

- Critical care nursing.
- Paediatric nursing.
- Oncology nursing.
- Obstetrics nursing/midwifery.

The minimum admission requirement for Master of Science at the University of Nairobi is that:
- One must be holder of Bachelor of Science degree in nursing from the University of Nairobi or any other institution which is recognised by senate of the University of Nairobi.
- Those applying for the programme should be registered by profession body of nursing (such as nursing council of Kenya in Kenya).
- Those who have higher or advance diploma in Nursing.
The Master of Science in nursing in the University of Nairobi takes a minimum of four semesters and maximum of eight semesters. Each semester takes duration of 15 weeks. The MScN first year’s courses are compulsory and they include advance nursing practice, biomedical sciences, biostatistics and epidemiology, research methods and communication sciences and pharmacology and pharmacotherapy.
The total fees paid for one to pursue master of nursing at the University of Nairobi are Kshs.553, 000. Kshs.233, 000 is paid in first year while Kshs.263, 000 is then paid in the second year of study.
