Tourism is one of the major sources of foreign revenue in Kenya. Tourism is one of the most developed and established sector in the country as a result of the benefits it has to the country. Most of the foreigners expect the best services from tourism sector and therefore proper training is required by the tourism personnel.

In line with this, most of the universities has developed and has facilities to offer training to the personnel required for the services in the tourism sector. Maasai Mara is therefore one of the universities which has been able to establish a school to offer courses related to tourisms. Several courses are offered under the school of Tourism and Natural Resources Management in this university which are taught by experienced lecturers.

Courses in the School of Tourism and Natural Resource Management:

Bachelor of Tourism Management – as the name suggests, the course involves how the tourism sector can be successfully managed. The students are equipped with the necessary skills on how to handle any situation related to the tourism sector. The minimum requirements for the enrolment of the course are a minimum Grade of C+ in KCSE with at least a C in Mathematics and English or Business Studies or, 2 principals and a subsidiary pass at “A” level plus at least a pass in Mathematics and English or a Diploma in Tourism Management from a recognized institution. The course is offered in Full time for a period of four years. It require a tuition fee of Ksh 89,500 and Statutory Charge of Ksh 15,750 per academic year.

Bachelor of Science in Wildlife Management – wildlife is important and therefore the management and good care taken to them can make the sector be more beneficial as many tourists travel to see the wildlife. This course equip the learner with strong skills on how to use and care about the wildlife for the benefits of the sector and country at whole. The minimum requirements are a C+ in KCSE with at least a C in Mathematics a C in Mathematics, Chemistry, Geography or Physics, Biology or physical Sciences. Alternatively, the candidate should have attained at least two Principals and a Subsidiary pass at “A” level in Mathematics, Chemistry, Physics, Biology or a Diploma in a related field from a recognized institution.

Bachelor of Science in Forestry – forests are also important in the society as they act as water catchment areas. Without forests, even the climate would be affected. The course enable the students to tackle any situation in which forests are concerned. The minimum requirements are a C+ in KCSE with at least a C in Mathematics a C in Mathematics, Chemistry, Geography or Physics, Biology or physical Sciences, or the candidate should have attained at least two Principals and a Subsidiary pass at “A” level in Mathematics, Chemistry, Physics, Biology or a Diploma in a related field from a recognized institution.

Bachelor of Science in Environmental Studies – this involves the environment and all what encounter them in the real world. It equips the students with knowledge on how to handle situations affecting the environment such as pollution, deforestation and many more situations. The requirements for enrolment is a C+ in KCSE with at least a C+ in Biology, in Mathematics, Chemistry, English and Geography or Physics, or the candidate attained 2 principals and a subsidiary pass at “A” level. Alternatively, a Diploma in a related field can be used to enroll for the course. The course is undertaken in four academic years in the Main Campus and the fee required per academic year is a statutory charge of Ksh 15,750 and Ksh 89,500 for tuition fee.
