Mathematics is a subject that majority of people do not like it especially those in primary and secondary school in Kenya. This is the perception they hold right from childhood and they end up performing poorly in it. Those who create interest in mathematics end up enjoying it more and some of them advance in it until doctor of philosophy level.

Statistics is another course which is feared by majority of college and university students and in most cases majority of students fail it. Therefore, the school of mathematics in the university of Nairobi offers undergraduate (degree) and postgraduate programme (master and doctor of philosophy).

The undergraduate programmes offered at the school of mathematics in the University of Nairobi include:

  • Bachelor of Science in Actuarial Science.
  • Bachelor of Science in Mathematics.
  • Bachelor of Science in Statistics.

The admission requirements for the above undergraduate programmes include:

  • One should be a KCSE holder or tis equivalent,    

                    i.            B.Sc. Actuarial Science requires a mean grade of C+ and B in Mathematics.

                  ii.            B.Sc. Mathematics requires KCSE mean grade of C+ and B in mathematics.

                iii.            B.Sc. Actuarial Science requires a mean grade of B+ and a B+ in mathematics. or

  • Advance level certificate with two principal passes in mathematics or physics/mathematics, mathematics/chemistry, mathematics/economics; or
  • Those with diploma in education with the mathematics as the major subject.
  • Those with diploma in computer studies, statistics or applied sciences.

The mode of study for undergraduate programmes if full time.

Master programmes offered at the school of mathematics in the University of Nairobi include;

  • M.Sc. in Actuarial Science.
  • M.Sc. in Biometry.
  • M.Sc. in Pure Mathematics.
  • M.Sc. in Applied Mathematics.
  • M.Sc. in Mathematical Statistics.
  • M.Sc. in Social Statistics.

Doctor of philosophy programmes offered at the school of mathematics in the University of Nairobi include:

  • Ph.D in Actuarial Science.
  • Ph.D in Biometry.
  • Ph.D in Pure Mathematics.
  • Ph.D in Applied Mathematics.
  • Ph.D in Mathematical Statistics.
  • Ph.D in Social Statistics.
