Medical Laboratory Sciences with IT course offered at kenya public university Maseno,that allows graduates to acquire skills and experience that enable them work in medical and research laboratories. Both diploma and degree in medical laboratory sciences are offered at Maseno University. The degree program is offered at Siriba main campus whereas diploma program is offered at City campus Kisumu.

Maseno University is a public university in kenya which is fully accredited by the Kenya Medical Laboratory Technicians and Technologist Board (KMLTTB) and therefore its graduates compete favorably with those from other institutions in the job market. To their advantage is the IT component incorporated to the course enabling them to fit to the ever changing trend of disease diagnoses towards “digital world”. The medical laboratory students usually access computer courses relevant to their area of specialization such as medical laboratory disease diagnoses and database management.

With the fully functional school of medicine, medical laboratory students are now able to supplement their semester practical work. The students’ practical skills and experience are boost by well planned hospital rotations at Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Teaching and Referral Hospital in kenya. Students are ferried at specific days of the week to the facility where they objectively work in the assigned sections of the laboratory. In addition to the well structured practicals scheduled throughout the semester and the hospital attachment and rotations, students usually pay academic visits to various research and learning institutions including Kenya Medical Research Institutes, Centre for Disease Control and International Livestock Research Institute.

Medical laboratory sciences course if one of the courses offered in the School of Public Health and Community Development. Other courses offered under this faculty include; degree s in Medical laboratory technology with IT, Public Health, Pharmaceutical sciences and Nutrition and Dietetics. These courses, including Medical laboratory sciences, provide a good foundation that may lead someone specialize in medical fields in their postgraduates. Some of these postgraduate programs include: Masters in Microbiology, Parasitology, Mycology, Food microbiology, Medical genetics, Medical laboratory sciences, Public health and Nutrition and Dietetics.

Medical laboratory sciences course requires one to be registered by the Kenya Medical Laboratory Technicians and Technologists Board to practice in the medical laboratories. For one to meet the requirements for registration, he or she must have a 50% pass in the aggregate points in university examinations. He or she should also have gone through hospital attachment where his/her log book should be signed to be able to sit for the board exam. The pass mark for the board exam is 50% for all the examinable subjects; which include: Microbiology, Blood transfusion, Hematology, Parasitology and vector science and Cytology
