Kenyatta University is one of the public universities in Kenya. Kenyatta University is the second largest public university in Kenya following closely behind the University of Nairobi. Kenyatta University main campus in Kenya is located in Nairobi’s Kahawa area on Thika Super highway approximately 20 kilometres from the Nairobi Central Business District. Currently, Kenyatta University main campus in Nairobi has enrolled over 30,000 students in Kenya for the various degree programmes.
The Government of Kenya converted the Templar barracks to a teachers training college in Kenya in 1965, shortly after gaining indedpendence. The teachers training college was then named the Kenyatta College in Kenya which offered three years post ordinary teachers certificates in secondary education in Kenya.
Following an Act of Parliament, Kenyatta college was elevated to a constituent college of the University of Nairobi in Kenya in 1970. Kenyatta college was then named as Kenyatta University College. Later on in 1985, Kenyatta University College gained a university status and was finally named Kenyatta University in Kenya. At the time, Kenyatta university was the only insititution training teachers at both graduate and undergraduate levels in Kenya. Kenyatta University then mothered several other constituent college including the (JKUAT) Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology in Kenya which became a fully fledged university in 1988.
The Commissions for Higher Education in Kenya has accredited Kenyatta University to offer degrees at undergraduate, masters and doctoral levels in Kenya. The Kenyatta University has over the years expanded to have atleast 16 faculties in Kenya including the faculties of education, economics, law, health sciences, environmental studies, engineering, agriculture, public health, hospitality and tourism.
Kenyatta University in Kenya is also nationally known for its newly built Kenyatta University post modern library that is key in provision of standard education. Kenyatta University has atleast 11 campuses in Kenya. Some of these Kenyatta University campuses are, Kenyatta University Parklands campus that mainly offers law, Kenyatta University Ruiru Campus located in Ruiru along Thika Road, Kenyatta University Kitui Campus, Kenyatta University Mombasa Campus, Kenyatta University Nairobi Campus, and Kenyatta University Nyeri Campus. The newly formed Technical University of Kenya, formerly Pwani University College in Kenya was also founded as a campus of Kenyatta University. Machakos University College is a constituent college of Kenyatta University. Kenyatta University has an open learning, school based, full and part time as well as e learning modules.
