Admission Requirements for Bachelor of Science in Nutrition and Dietetics in Mount Kenya University

Nutrition and Dietetics is one of the departments in Mount Kenya University which offer the programmes: Bachelor of Science in Nutrition and Dietetics, a diploma in Clinical and Community Nutrition and a certificate in Clinical and Community Nutrition. This department was created due to the high incidence and prevalence of preventable diseases, the emergence of new diseases, food insecurity and the need for proper nutrition which led to high demand of the training institution to offer nutrition related courses.

This department therefore opt to offer the courses named above through block semester and tri-semester mode of delivery which encourage methods that encourage learner-centered active learning which include lectures, tutorials, group discussion, demonstrations, assignments, laboratory practicals, field trips and research projects. This programme takes a period of four academic years in which the students should have completed a total of 56 units and pass all of them, undertake one field industrial attachment equivalent to seven units and write a research project comprising of two units for the full qualification for the certification of the Bachelor in Nutrition and Dietetics.

Entry Requirements to the undergraduate programme:

Direct Entry;

All the students admitted in the school of Health Science, Department of Nutrition and Dietetics to pursue Bachelor of Science in Nutrition and Dietetics must satisfy the requirements that:

i)                    They must satisfy the common university requirements for admission or candidates should be a Holder of Division II at KCE or EACE or KACE with at least two principals

Or

ii)                   A diploma from a recognized institution in the following areas: Nutrition and Dietetics, Community Nutrition, Nursing, Clinical Medicine, Pharmacy, Public Health, Community Health, and other health related courses recognized by the University Senate.

iii)                 In addition, candidates must have obtained at least a C (plain) the minimum cut-off points drawn from KCSE and C (plain) level or its equivalent for each of the following subjects: Mathematics or Physics, Chemistry or Physical Science, Biology/Biological Sciences, English or Kiswahili.

Entry Vide University Bridging;

A holder of KCSE certificate or equivalent with a minimum of C+ and lacking a cluster subject either Mathematics or Physics, Chemistry/ Physical Science, Biology/Biological Science, English or Kiswahili.

A holder of EACE certificate or equivalent with a minimum of two principals and lacking O level cluster subject grade as explained above.

The course can also be undertaken through credit transfers and exemptions depending on the qualification of the applicants. Through Credit transfer policy;

i)                    The applicant must have attained the pass mark in the subjects considered for the credit transfer/exemption from an institution recognized by the senate.

ii)                   The applicants must have passed the final examination of the year in which the subjected to be exempted was examined. There also exist conditions seeking the transfer/exemption for a particular subject which are: – the applicants shall pay a non-refundable credit transfer/exemption fee as determined by the School of Board and approved by the senate, a formal application on a prescribed form should be lodged with the Dean of School, the application should include justification and documentary support for the exemption to be considered, the school of board may require the applicant to sit for an examination and no exemption shall be granted for professional of clinical subjects.

Nutrition and Dietetics degree Registration:

After the applicants have been successfully enrolled for the programme, they should ensure that they all fully registered by paying the full fees as per semester or academic year and filing various application forms from the university as detailed in the fee structure and registration regulations provided in the Students Information handbook.
