It is true that not many people would consider themselves creative and not all who consider themselves creative nurture their natural talent. Arts and Design is one area that is certainly lacking in most Primary schools and High Schools in Kenya. Fortunately, the University of Nairobi offers B.A. Design (B05) through the School of the Arts and Design. There is however certain criteria that an individual must meet in order to be considered for the course.

Admission Criteria for B.A. Design at UON

  • Applicants should have acquired a minimum grade of C+ in KCSE or equivalent.

  • In addition, to the minimum grade, applicants should have acquired a minimum of C+ in the following cluster groups:

  • English/Kiswahili

  • Mathematics/ Commerce/ Economics/ or Biology or Physics or Chemistry

  • History and Government/ Geography/ Islamic Education/ Social Education and Ethics/ Hindu Education

  • Home Science/ Art and Design/ Wood work/ Metal work/ Building construction/ Drawing and Design/ Computer aided design or

  • Any other Design related digital technology

  • Applicants who have an international Baccalaureate (IB) or equivalent are also eligible to undertake the course.

  • Applicants with a Kenya Advanced Certificate of Education (KNEC) or equivalent, holders of 2 Principal passes, one in Art, if Art is not one of the two principal passes are eligible to undertake the course. The applicants must have obtained CREDIT pass at KCSE or equivalent examination in Art; or

  • Applicants who are Diploma holders of Kenya National Examination Council (KNEC) in Art, Design, Computer Aided Design or design related digital technology or equivalent, with a credit pass at KCS or equivalent examination in Art are welcome to undertake the course.

  • Applicants who meet any other relevant criteria listed in the General Admissions Criteria are eligible to undertake the course.

B.A Design course requires students to complete a minimum of 56 units. In year 1, students are required to complete a total of 16 units. In year 2, they should undertake 17 units while in year 3 and year 4 they should cover 14 and 9 units respectively.

Fee Structure for B.A Design

The total sum expected at the end of the four years in tuition fee is Ksh 539,000. The sum is broken down as follows: Year 1 students are to pay a sum of Ksh 154,500; Year 2 students are to pay a sum of Ksh 157,500; Year 3 students are to pay a sum of Ksh 1333,500 and Year 4 students are to pay a sum of Ksh 93,500.
