 Kenya Institute of special Education (KISE) is an agency of the Ministry of Education in Kenya. It was established in 1986 by the government of Kenya following the legal notice number 17 in February 1986. The institute is headed by a director who is appointed by the minister for education and the director is the secretary of the council that governs the Institute.

The institute conducts in-service courses for professional working in special needs education, trains special needs teachers, prepare courses for personnel I the field of special needs education, acts as a center for training and demonstration for inabilities, conducts research in special needs education as well as maintenance and repair of special needs materials and equipments for persons with special needs. It also involves in of special needs resources.

KISE values excellence and professionalism, moral integrity, respect and courtesy, good stewardship, tolerance and empathy. It offers various hospitality services such as disability friendly bus, cooking facilities, table and chair hire, guest house outside catering as well as halls for hire

 Kenya Institute of Special Education Programmes

1)    Full time Programmes

 KISE offers certificate and diploma programs at its campus in Kasarani Nairobi. These courses are conducted through tutorials, visits and lectures. Trainees are assessed based on assays, term papers, special projects,special study paper and written examinations. They also attend to practical attachments in special needs education programs across Kenya. The diploma and certificate courses take three and two years respectively

 2)    Distance learning Programs

In this program, teachers or other persons living people with special needs are trained through distance learning. Under this program, KISE offers the following courses:

                        i.            Education of learners with hearing disabilities

                      ii.            Education of learners with Emotional and behavioral difficulties

                    iii.            Education of learners with special needs (inclusive Education)

The certificate and diploma programs take one year and two years respectively. All diploma courses are examined by the Kenya National Examination Council (KNEC) whereas the certificate courses are examined by the Ministry of Education and the Kenya Institute of Special Education.
