JKUAT is one of the most developed universities in Kenya which has been able to see off a lot of graduates who have been able to create successful careers and life. JKUAT has a campus situated in Westlands about 10km from the City Centre on the Kabarsiran Avenue which is off Waiyaki Way, next to Kianda School and opposite Communications Commission of Kenya (CCK).

This university campus has various departments among which the Department of Basic and Applied Science is part. The Department of Basic and Applied Science offer different courses which are Postgraduate, Undergraduate and Diploma courses in the related fields of study.

Postgraduate Courses

The courses offered under this title are a Master of Science in Chemistry in the option of Analytical, Organic and Natural Products which require a holder of at least Second Class Honours (upper division) having studied Chemistry either as a single subject at Bachelor Degree Level or its equivalent from a recognized university and should have proof of postgraduate research ability, M.sc in Bio information and Molecular Biology which require a Bachelor’s degree with at least a Second Class Honours (Upper division) in the following fields: Biochemistry or Molecule Microbiology, Biological and Agricultural Sciences, Computer Science, Mathematics and/or Statistics, Engineering and Health Sciences with sufficient background of Biochemistry in Undergraduate and Computer Sciences,

M.sc in Applied Statistics requiring the student to have a Bachelor in Statistics with at least a second Class Honours (upper division) or a Bachelors in Mathematics and majored in Statistics as well as M.sc in Pure Mathematics whose qualifications are a holder of a Bachelor degree with at least Second Class Honours (Upper Division) having studied Mathematics as a single subject or as a major of the two subjects, with a substantial number of units of Pure Mathematics studied in JKUAT or a recognized university by senate. In addition to meeting of the requirements, students who are admitted in this programme should be proficient in at least one of the high level programming language.

Undergraduate Courses

This campus department of Basic and Applied Science also offer the Bachelor courses and they include a Bachelor of Science in Actuarial Science (BAS) where the student to be admitted in this course should have a Mean Grade of C+ (Plus) with at least a C+ (Plus) in both Mathematics and English or a holder of KACE or the A-level equivalent should have at least two principal passes including Mathematics. Diploma applicants should be holders of Diploma in Applied Science with at least a CREDIT PASS in relevant subjects from an institution recognized by the university senate as well as Bachelor of Science in Mathematics and Computer Science which require a KCSE mean aggregate of at least C+ (Plus), a C+(Plus) in Mathematics and in additional, the student should have at least a C in both subjects from the alternative of Chemistry or Physics and Physical and Biological Science or should have a minimum of 2 principal passes in Science subject in General Certificate of Education (GCE),Advanced levels/Kenya Advanced Certificate of Education (KACE).
